2002 RFI Exhaust Problem

I have a GTX RFI with a rebuilt top end and good compression. The problem I'm having is exhaust appears to be coming out of the throttle body when cranking. The ski with attempt to start when cranking, but won't run for longer than a second. Can anyone help me understand what may be going on?

Check your rotary valve.

I have checked the rotary valve and it is timed correctly. Any other ideas?

Only other thing I can think of is the ignition timing being off. Maybe check the flywheel and pickup.
