2002 GTI - Quick Dess/MPEM question

Hey guys, tried to answer this myself by reading the manual but I am getting a bit confused.

2002 GTI 717 with unknown history - brand new battery and plugs, compression 130 PSI both

Put the key that supposedly goes with it on the post - no beep, no lights, no gauges, but cranks strong but won't start (I believe no spark - won't fire with little gas in cylinders, waiting on tester from amazon) tested coil and magneto and they are good. Took mag cover off and it is very clean.

Acts the same when I put any Seadoo key on the post.

Is this just how they react with the wrong key?

There is no possibility of finding the right key so if so, I will probably just order an aftermarket MPEM that works with any key.

Is that thought process correct?

Here it is next to my GTX which is now running GREAT thanks to this forum!

It shouldn’t crank with any key. Without a working beeper it will be hard to duplicate.

You can send the MPEM to somebody like Westside Powersports that can test the mpem and program a key.

The aftermarket MPEM’s are hit and miss.

Ok I will contact westside sports and compare pricing with cheap amazon MPEM.

So I think it's safe to say it might be the correct key but the DESS post or MPEM is faulty

Thank you !

Don't spend any money just yet. The ski may have an "aftermarket MPEM" and that is why it works with any key. If the ski turns over the MPEM is likely Ok. You may have a spark problem or a fuel problem. Start your testing there. LIkely you have a fuel issue. Spark is easy to check. Good Luck !!

That makes sense - just strange I have no gauges, lights, or beeps. All fuses are good. I will be checking spark with a tester tonight.

Thanks guys

Ok just tested and I am not get spark when cranking. I think I'll start with replacing the rectifier.

Again it acts the same with any seadoo key - no beep, no gauges, no lights, just cranks when push the button

Kinda weird...

Don;t replace the rectifier, check voltage to the coil. Check your grounds. I think you have a holder relay in the back which could have a blown fuse or the relay could be bad. Download parts of the manual and test components. Don't just change/replace parts. Good Luck !

Post a picture of your MPEM to see if it is OEM. The cranking but everything else dead is odd.

Also here are some general pics - not sure what the white sealant on the pump plate is. All fuses are good by the way.

Thanks

I'd spend some time testing the rear electrical box and coils. Download the wiring diagram. Check the start/stop switch wiring. One cool thing, the ski doesn't have a ton of wires. Good Luck. check your grounds again. :D

I think if it was mine the first thing I would do is install a new beeper. It’s really hard to tell what the mpem is doing without one.

I agree with that 100%. The key recognition issue is strange which makes me think aftermarket MPEM. I really don't think he has an MPEM issue but... gotta check it all. I go with the expensive stuff LAST. Rule out everything else. LOL

Ok I will order a new beeper and see if it beeps at all.

Unsurprisingly, the new rectifier changed nothing. I am trying not to be a parts swapper but I believe I have done all the ignition system tests mentioned in the 2002 manual that don't involve one of these harnesses (apart from testing the start button itself, doing that one tonight)

I will double check the coil tests - also inexpensive to swap that

This paragraph has me thinking my DESS post is bad - I am never getting power to my gauges ever

On my 2003 gti I think my fuel gauge will come up if I push the start button without installing the lanyard. I only say I think because one of my skis doesn’t but I can’t remember which one.

Gotcha, yea the manual says that they are supposed to do that. Mine does not :(

So I tested the DESS post according to this and did get a slight resistance between the black and black/yellow wires - so maybe it is a bad DESS post?

Typically the OEM MPEM’s have a sticker on the back with the Seadoo OEM part number.

Dan knows these very well so I don’t doubt he is correct on that mpem.

that's an aftermarket MPEM, and aftermarket MPEM's are notoriously JUNK.
change that and go from there

That would also explain why it acts the same with any key.

I will try a cheap aftermarket one from amazon just to test and see what happens. Then if solves it, I'll return it to amazon and find a good used OEM MPEM

Just a FYI, aftermarket MPEM’s are very hit and miss with a lot of miss. Also you typically can’t return electrical parts.

Imo, waste of time and money.
Get on one of the many Facebook groups and ask around for a factory mpem, don't chase good money after bad

Solved

Cheap amazon MPEM got it beeping, and running well. Gauges and all.

I'll be returning the amazon one (had a crack in the plastic anyway) and sourcing a good used OEM one.

You guys did it again. This forum rocks!!!!!!!

Thank you
