I have a 2001 Seadoo xp, and the engine will not turn over to start, all it does is when i hit the starter button it make a noise like it wants to turn over but it does not. I have removed the spark plugs and it still does the same thing. I had this on the lake and it ran fine, and after about an hour of running i pulled it up to my dock and i sucked up a rope and from this point on it has not turned over at all. anyone have any ideas as what may have happened, and how do i fix it.

Jim

It sounds like you have rope wrapped around the shaft. Loosen steering cable from jet nozzle. Loosen trim rod from nozzle. Pull pump and remove rope. Re-install everything.

It does sound like you’ve got the pump locked up. Look through the intake grate with a flashlight and I’m willing to bet you still have something wedged in there.

i have removed the rope and i have checked the pump and everything is good, but the engine still will not turn over to start.

this jetski ran perfect until the rope got wrapped around the shaft, is it possible that the rope locked up this engine?

Well a couple simple things that cause this are connections and battery cables. They can corrode from inside out but still look good. Starter issue. But, the fact that this happened when you sucked up a rope seems too coincidental.
A pump issue or obstruction can cause this. You can pull it in less than 10 minutes (described in my first response) and see if it spins freely. You can also see if your engine will turn over with the pump removed. This will quickly eliminate the pump or obstruction as being any part of the issue.

So you pulled the pump, and it rotates freely when not attached to the hull? Did you try to rotate the motor by hand with the plugs out?

I have tried to turn the engine over after removing the pump, and the engine still will not turn over. is it possible that this rope has locked up the engine? it was a small diameter rope.

Did you try turning it over by hand, or with the start button? It makes a big difference in what you need to look at next.

It’s possible that the rope caused the engine to lock up, but it’s also possible that the starter is weak, that you have a poor engine ground, or that the solenoid is bad. Trying to turn the motor by hand will tell us whether we’re looking at an internal engine issue or an electrical one.

Listen to jeremy, pull the plugs, the pto cover, and try to rotate the motor by hand, both ways,,,to rule out or rule in the starter,,, maybe the bendix is stuck on the flywheel?

I hope that getting the rope stuck in the pump and binding the impeller didn't damage the crankshaft. So, yes with the spark plugs and pump removed, try to rotate the driveshaft by hand as you shine a flashlight into the spark plug holes. Look to see for any movement in the pistons as you turn the driveshaft.

The 01 XP has a carrier bearing under the shock. Supports the long ass drive shaft. It may have seized.

That is something that needs to be eliminated if the engine cannot be turned by hand. You will have to remove the c- clip to release the rear shaft to eliminate that.

how do i get the instructions on how to remove this C=clip? i would like to see if this works. I am not sure but after the rope was around the drive shaft is when the engine now will not turn over, so i am thinking that maybe the driveshaft may have got bent of stuck somehow.

thanks
jim

Remove the rear hatch cover. Locate the black bellows, just in front of that is a stainless steel hat. Pull back on that, with a screw driver, press the clip out. Don't lose it. It doesn't take much pressure to pop the clip. Here's a video I made, not your ski, but the principle is the exact same.

Pull the RAVE valves and look at the piston skirts. If they are TORE up, that could be a clue if the engine seized or not. That being said, you would still need to do as others have suggested to correctly diagnose it.
