2001 GTX DI, Are they Junk?

I have a chance to pickup a 2001 GTX with 58 hours, motor seized. All my freinds that work on jet skis say, "stay away from the DI, they have problems". I also have a spare 97 gtx hull, can I use the non injection gas tank and just convert the 2001 to carbs? Any advice on this.

i dont think so............the 97 was a 787 , the 2001 is a 951 , you would need the entire electrical system from the 787 in order to get the proper spark and have the proper connections for gauges sensors etc. I would say if you can get the 01 for around 300 bucks and pick up an SBT block , you can have a running , breathing GTX ffor around 15-1800........GIVEN that there are no underlying electrical system problems. what you have to figure out before dropping in your new motor, is what killed the last one.

schmidt is spot on.
the DI's have issues and they are NOT for the regular joe to own/fix/convert. I wouldn't fix up a DI w/o some real knowledge and background with ski's and DI's specifically.

I had a similar experience (ski is still in my garage)
2000 rx di, blown engine
the plan of action has started

bought the di hull
bought a 98 gtxL hull with engine
i'll strip the di hull and sell whats sellable
strip the 98 gtxl hull and put engine, electronics, fuel tank & misc into the RX
sell the 98 gtxl hull cheap.
in addition to some other minor misc stuff, a conversion really would require that you find another complete comparable ski perhaps with a bad hull or no title, cheap, and move everything over into the DI hull.
its an undertaking, but it can be done.
i haven't started my project yet, but all the parts are there to get started. I'll do a build thread when i actually begin, but i'm estimating a good 20 hours shop time, + rebuilding the 951 swap engine (10 more?) and misc, probably a good solid 40 hours of work.

the good news is...
you can sell the DI core parts
you can sell the di fuel pump
"" di electronics
"" di fuel tank & sender
and misc di parts that don't go into the new hull.

to follow up on the OP's question, my advice would be to purchase this dam cheap... or not at all.
it would probably be cheaper and easier to just buy a GTX Carbed ski and rebuild it as needed vs doing a full conversion
again, this assumes you don't have a full shop, experience, resources, and tools, simply based on the fact that you asked the question itself, i'm assuming you don't have all of the above.

i'd price a blown GTXDI with a nice hull and working electronics at $5-600 or i'd walk away, its the only way you won't get bit in the ass. if you pay more than that, your going to end up investing more $ than the ski will be worth

GTX DI's can be difficult to repair on your own. Took me a while to get mine running good again but i'm going to sell it and buy a new machine for better reliability.
