Evening Fellows.

I just aquired 2 new to me PWCS.

1 is a '88 Seadoo, the other a Yammy 650 which I know you guys arent interested in but will mention regardless! :)

The previous owner thought that the solenoid was shot, as he could not start it, so pulled it out and had it tested. IT was fine, and determined the battery to be bad. Does this model use a 12V or 6V battery? ANy tips for wiring the solenoid back in, he left it out.

Does the '88 need any special oil or is Walmart PWC oil fine? Anything else on this machine that I should go over before attempting to start? I am new to the PWC game.

A funny note, I believe the Seadoo to be smaller CC wise, anyone know exactly what it is? Funny thing is, the PO said the Seadoo was quicker, even though the engine is smaller displacement. It is definately heavier though!

Regards,

Chris

PS, pics to follow, waiting for camera to charge.

You need a 16cl-b battery for it. But please don't buy a a wal-mart battery. We see a bunch of them every spring, that are bad out of the box. Do yourself a favor... and buy a trusted brand. (I recommend Die-Hard)

Thanks for the reply.

SO, is a 16cl-b battery a 12 volt or 6 volt? lol Sorry I am not familiar with that terminology.

They Yammy has a 16CL_B in it, just checked. Are they 12V or 6 V, just need to know if I can charge the one with my standard 12V charger.

Hate to hijack the thread, but I think I might have just gotten one of those bad ones. Just got it yesterday, charged it up and it seems like it just doesn't have the juice to turn the motor over under compression. Take the plugs out and it spins fine. I was thinking it might have been something on my ski, since I've just put the motor together, but man it just looks and feels like the battery is bad. Guess I'll be going back to wally world.

yes 12 v,
yes, i love wally world but NOT for batteries !!!
(and i think their warranty is only 90 days, not 1 yr like most)
the 88 seadoo is the 587 I believe.
Small but reliable little engines, pretty easy to tinker with.
although smaller engine, it might be faster, or at least "quicker",
give them both a good once over, you have a LOT of old parts there !
and enjoy the water

the seadoo will be a bit quicker than the yamaha with one person aboard, put two people on both and the yamaha will walk away from the seadoo. the higher revving seadoo will take a bigger top speed hit from the extra weight than the yami. the 650 yamaha motor, while dead reliable, is probably the least high-performance engine they put in a waverunner. really conservative timing and porting from the factory, so they're not really worth modding even. they should run until the zombies come so long as there is oil run through it. what year is it?

I think the Yammy is a '93 based on the serial number. Thanks for all the help. Lets see now if I can figure out all the wiring for the removed solenoid the previous owner left unhooked! Here are some pics.
