I have a 12v low indicator and thought it was a bad battery. Replaced the battery and within an hour or so the new battery was dead. Any way to tell which part in the charging system is bad. Dont really want to go down the replace component after component to resolve the issue.

Welll........

Other than wires... there are only 2 parts in the system. The stator and the regulator/rectifier unit.

Unless you shorted out the stator... it's probably the regulator.

Get a meter, and check the windings of the stator from the plug at the engine. Just make sure it's not grounded or shorted. If they are OK... replace the regulator.

You can check whether you are getting charging by metering the battery voltage while the engine is reving about 5000 rpm. If it doesn't increase from original 12 V the charging coil in the magneto may be bad. You should see over 13V. If it is over 15V, the regulator is bad. Look at your engine service manual section re charging system.

Had that problem once, found it was a bad connection on the pins of the connector where the wires come out of the magneto.
