Hi everyone,
I'm totally new to boating and 2 stroke motors. I consider myself pretty handy and learn things quickly. This is my new project. I've had project cars in the past.
I bought a speedster with 1 blown motor. Previous owner didn't know what was wrong with the motor except that it wouldn't run and had oil leaking.

I got the boat home and pulled out the motor. That's when I found out the crankcase was full of oil on both sides of the crankcase. After a little research I have discovered that it was probably oil hydrolocked because bad middle crankcase seals. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until after I had removed the cylinder heads.
The cylinders don't look real bad. I can feel a bit of scoring with my finger. The pistons have some scoring. no chunks are missing. The top plate looks really good. One piston has the bottom ring stuck in the groove an won't move freely.

I have also found that the only way to replace the crankshaft middle seals is to buy a new crank.

My question is, at this point, am I better just to buy a rebuild case and heads? I would have liked to rebuild it myself but it seems like buying all the parts would cost more than a rebuild one. A rebuild one in Kelowna, BC is $1800 from Seadoo.
With the Canadian dollar being so shitty, I don't know if I would save anything getting stuff from the US.

Any suggestions on plans of attack or places that have good quality service and parts would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pics

Buy a reman crankshaft at 500, new pistons at 200 and a bore job at 175, gasket set at 100 and you are in business. All price are Canadian.... don't forget new pin bearing at 20 each!

Just did mine last winter

Where are those prices from?

The seats are decent. Only a couple cracks in 2 of them.

I'd personally stay away from SBT. With shipping it's only going to be 200 more to get an OEM rebuild it sounds like so I'd go that route.

I'm rebuilding the exact same boat right now and have a thread. Your seats do look very nice, someone took care of those for sure.

So i got the motor all torn down. I opened the crankcase and found a little water with all the oil. Is there no gasket or even silicone sealing the 2 case halves? And on one of the bearings the plastic holder was out.

I also decided to buy a seadoo rebuilt core. It wasn't much more than bring one in from the states.

Is there anyone that has installed one of these rebuilt motors that I can bounce questions off of? I also bought a couple genuine carb rebuild kits.

Bearing was out of commission for sure! Ask your questions in this tread.

I just did a full rebuild on my challenger 1800 using all oem parts. If you have questions just pm me

Waiting for parts so I decide to remove peeling turf stickers.

And how dirty can one person's forearm be?

So I decided to rebuild the carbs on the engine I'm rebuilding. I bought genuine Mikuni kit from OSDparts. I also bought the pop off tester pump from SBT.
I did the first carb and after doing the pop off test, It's popping off at about 12 psi and the book says it should be between 40-56. I'm not sure what it could be. I don't see any oil leaking around the o-ring.
I also thought I'd check the other carb that I hadn't torn down yet to see what it was. It popped off at 15psi. I then rebuilt that one and still at 15psi.
Anyone have any ideas? Just the springs? I find it funny that they are both off by that much.

no, I didn't change the springs. It didn't come with the kit. And I just re-read my invoice and they are OSD needle and seat. I thought for sure I had checked off OEM upgrade.
Where is the best place to buy genuine mikuni rebuild kits? It's way too expensive to buy part by part from dealer in Canada and the OSD $75 kit turned into about $200 after shipping, duty taxes and exchange rate.

Got my new OEM rebuilt engine and noticed the bottom has an extra plate on bottom.

Excited to put it together but a little nervous.

That's an rfi set of cases. Big thing to check before you get too far is that the magneto end of the crank is correct. The rfi had a lager snout which used a different flywheel.

Just to confirm. This new engine has 81.89 pistons, this is stock bore size? I just want to make sure I don't need to trim my rave valves.

Do I need to plug those 2 holes on the reservoir on the rfi engine if mine is a carb engine?

I told seadoo I wanted to change jet pump oil and this is what they gave me. I don't think this is right.
