1996 Speedster Restoration

The Port tach isn't coming alive till I hit 3500 RPM then it works till RPM drops below 2000. The gauge seems to be coming online sooner than the first trip so I'm wondering if it will heal itself.

I thought I had the speedometer sensor online. It seems to be limited out at 15mph. Strange because when I back off the throttle it goes from not reading to 15mph. Might be a bad sensor.

Second ride in the Speedster today. We took some skis I'm working on out this morning and went back out in the Speedster this afternoon. We had a good time. All boats made it back to the dock under their own power. :) I did have to maxx it out. Engines still tight but we hit 50mph on the GPS.

I see from the picture you got those tachs working.

Nah my decals are in pitiful condition especially the rear. :) Mine are the purple-ish ones. Thanks for thinking of me. I have checked these out and plan on getting them as the prices and quality of really good. There is a local guy that says he can remove the old decals very quickly with is detailing equipment. I have some other irons in the fire but may well end up with the decal replacement. Thanks again !!

I got motivated today and removed the hood on the Speedster. It was easier than I anticipated. I have 2 other hoods in much better condition but I opted to paint this one. Since I am painting it, I figured I may as well do the trashiest one of the group and it was the one on the ski that got chosen. Guy painted this and the paint was coming off so I had to sand the whole hood. Then I took a shot and didn't seal the hood before painting. I ended up doing more sanding after I put the base coat on. My opinion was that anything would look better than it did but I endu up on my "A-Game" I tried to do a half-azz job but couldn't. LOL Gonna mount it tomorrow and remove a few stickers in bad shape.

Almost good enough to clear and install but that was 100 grit on the finish. LOL

Suffered a small scale GNAT Attack but it looks good.

How difficult is it to remove the steering wheel on the Speedster? I want to get at the yellow cover behind the steering wheel so I can clean it up and paint it. I can do a better job if I remove it but I don't want to break or damage anything.

I sprayed a little Blaster XP on the steering wheel after removed the nut and have it a number of firm but gentle, not so hard wacks with my 2 pound dead blow hammer and the dang thing came right off. I was shocked. I didn't want to mess with it as I figured I'd end up with a damaged shaft or steering box. Very happily I disconnected the fuel gauge wiring and removed the cover. I have it all painted up now. I am going a little further with the boat that I intended but once you start finishing up you see all the little things and that's what really makes the difference. I put the canopy back on the boat for a picture but I still have cleaning to do. Who knows... I might remove and replace all the graphics. I"m thinking "Crab Island" in Destin this summer. :D

This picture is "before" I painted the hood.

That hood looks really good, your one heck of a good sprayer,
All in the preparation. The little air vents, steering wheel cover and fuel gauge cover holder I painted with rustoleum. Matched pretty darn good. Boy O Boy they were pitiful. As I stated in an earlier post I was suprised and happy the steering wheel came off so easily as it made the job so much easier.

hi guys, need help! Does anybody know where to get this 90degree brass fitting, I snapped it pulling hose out.. Or how to fix it? Size of inside diameter?

I did get the port tach working properly. I think it was the cleaning of all the pins and plugs It was only working from 4K on up. The Speedo is still a bit of a mystery. An air hose on the speed sensor to get it to spin really fast nets about 30mph on the gauge. I was thinking perhaps the magnet is bad and I have a lot of them as spares. Not sure about that one and I won't be fixing it.

Boat is gone to a new home. That thing sure is sweet. My wife and I took it out for a couple of test runs so I could make any adjustments needed. It was fun but we prefer the jet skis. In case anyone is wondering I got the $6500 I wanted for the boat. That was my plan from the beginning. Not sure I want to do another boat but perhaps if the right one comes along. :D I'll buy the next one a lot cheaper. I was building this boat for the family but we really don't have a use for it and neither of my children wanted it. I'm not sure they are related to me. :D My cousins and I would have dang near KILLED to have something like this to play in. Oh well.... NEXT !!
