1996 Seadoo Gtx Won't turn over, clicks

Hi All,

I have had amazing success getting my skis running with help from this forum in the past. Thanks!

I have a new issue. I just tried to startup my 1996 Gtx for the first time this season. It was winterized and stored outside in PA. I have a fresh battery. When I hit the start button, I get a click of the engine but it doesn't start. The engine slightly jolts then nothing. It seems like the engine may be locked up or there is a starter issue. How do I go about identifying the issue?

Thanks a lot!
Evan

Engine could an filled with oil. I would remove the plug and try to turn it over by hand and than the starter

remove the plugs and try and turn the engine by hand, if it does probably a seized starter, I'm assuming you get the 2 beeps when you put the DESS on?

Thank you for the advice. Will try and post an update. Does it matter which direction I turn the shaft

DESS gives two beeps.

I have lost about half my tank of oil when I stored the ski on a sharp angle. I've had a leak I've yet to tackle (not sure where, but did find a messy magneto housing when I replaced the coil last year), so an engine filled with oil is very likely.

If no oil in the cylinders, then the most likely place are bad ground strap and main electrical connections to the block and to the starter.

2-strokes don't care what way you turn them. Yes it has a solenoid.

Pull the plugs and crank the engine. Oil will come out with GREAT force. Stand back.

Could be a bad ground wire I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago , I put a new battery and rebuild my starter and still wouldn't turn over . I changed my ground wire and bingo fired right up.

Took out the plugs and was able to get a A LOT of oil. However, when I put the plugs back in the engine isn't able to turn. The engine cranks easily when the plugs are out, and I'm using a fresh battery. Is there a good way to get all the oil in the engine out?

If the battery, cables, connection and starter are good, then keep on cranking with the plugs out. Good chance the starter is bad or going bad.

Are there any tricks to get the oil out other than cranking the engine with plugs out? Having trouble getting the engine to crank when I put the plugs back in. Thanks.

Not really... You could suck it out with a pump, but you'd never get it all. Put a towel over the holes and keep on cranking. If it is mostly out and still does not crank well, you likely have a bad starter.. Could be a bad cable or connection, but your description sounds like a starter..

Poured a little gas in the cylinder and same issue. When plugs are in it won't even quarter turn. Swapped batteries and no luck.

Looks like I'll be trying a new starter. Any advice before I do this? Also do I need to pull engine to remove starter?

Assuming the starter is still installed. Use jumper cables and a good known battery. Ground one side to the block and the other hit wire to the output side of the solenoid.

In this case, it would not matter. As long as he hooks up to the output side of the solenoid, the only thing receiving power will be the starter. No other electronics.

Follow the hot wire to the solenoid. That is the HOT side. The other side of the solenoid is the OUTPUT side.

Open the throttle while cranking with the plugs out, it lets the engine act like a pump and you'll get more oil out. With the throttle closed there is some vacuum in the case while cranking. Finally, if you put your thumb over the plug hole like a check valve so the piston pulls from the case on the intake stroke it will help too.

2strokenewbie I'm wondering did you get the oil out and start the ski? I ask because I have the exact same 96 GTX and I'm having the exact same problem. Oil is flying out when I turn it over. Wondering if you ever got it started. Also for others who have responded what would cause all that oil in the cylinders after storage? Is there a underlying problem that should be fixed? Thanks all.

There is injection oil filled in the rotary valve shaft cavity. This is kept out of the crank area via seals on the crank. These tend to start slowly leaking over the years. So when you store it, oil will fill the crank area. To combat this, some add a shutoff valve to the injection oil supply line. The problem is if you forget it, you will not have any oil injection for the motor. So some say if you add the valve, then always tie you dess key to the valve to remind you to turn it back on before running.

Soccerdad thanks. So here's the big question. Can i get this ski to start and run this year without replacing those seals? Do I block off the oil inj line then turn the ski over with plugs out until no more oil comes out? Then try to start it as I normally would with the oil line no longer blocked off of course?
