HI
well here goes my 01 xp has been playing up today last month i rebuilt the carbs cleaned them put new diaphrams in and new filters i then wound the low speed screws right in then backed them off 1 1/2 turns but the ski wouldnt start so with a bit of adjusting turning them back in (to lean it) it started and seemed fine (on hose) took it out today it was hard to start in the water but then it did go so i took a cruise and it sounded a bit lumpy, missy but seemed to accelerate ok but would not rev past 5500 rpm i then tightened the low speed screws a bit more seemed the same and is still hard to start any ideas ? am i running to rich ? im worried about leaning it out to much cause of engine damage help please

I have cleaned my rave valves but still the same im think its still something to do with carb but i havent been near the high speed screw so it is strange that it will not rev past 5000 rpm and is so missy any ideas?

Mike, if you cleaned the carbs and maybe missed some of the gunk in the passages it still could be the problem. I use carb cleaner to spray the passages with the small tube attached.The High Speed screw should be at "0" with the plastic cap in place for just 1/4 turn adjustment allowed by the cap. Have you done a compression test to see what is going on inside?

Here is some information on a compression test;
To test compression, remove both spark plugs. Place spark plug caps on the plug cap studs near the cylinder head to ground the empty caps. This completes the circuit of the ignition electrical system and prevents any electrical problems from the caps being un grounded. Using the correct adapter for the threaded end of the tester,( same length of the spark plug threads length)screw in the tester in one plug hole. Hold the throttle wide open. Push the start button. Watch the compression guage, when it peaks out at the most compression, let go the start button. Read the psi number. I would do it 3 times to be sure it is accurate. Check both cylinders the same way. The ideal compression is 150 psi per cylinder. If it is less, it's not a problem as long as they are close to being the same. If the psi is less than 90 it might need be time for a tear down and a rebuild. If the psi in 1 cylinder is say 140 psi and the other is 80 psi you need to tear down and repair. This difference is a lot then there is a problem. I hope this helps you.

Checked the compression 130psi on both cylinders i tighted the low speed screws back in till i felt slight resistance then backed them off 1 turn and it will not start now so tweaked them back a bit more about 1.5 turns still the same. im losing the will, lol

Ok compression is ok I would start with 1 1/2 turns on the Low Speed screws. Hows the spark? You might have a carb problem still. Try adding premixed gas and oil,same as you use, down the spark plugs say about 2-3 oz.each. The add the spark plugs and see if it fires. If it does the carbs are the problem as it's not getting gas.

right had the carbs off again i took the low speed adjuster right out cleaned it off and cleaned down the chamber in which it goes i then checked the rave valve check valve just out from crankcase, i could suck air through it from the end futherst away from crankcase is that correct? i then put low speed adjuster's back wound them in till resistance felt then backed them out 1.5 turns cranked over no start i then kept backing them out until it did start which it did after about 3 1/4 turns i ran it on the hose for 5 mins adjusted idle to 3000rpm reved it up all seemed fine so shut it off then tried to restart but to no joy. so then tried fine adjustment both ways and no joy

fact. settings...

here ya go, bud...

2001 XP 947 (2)BN-46I-42 MAIN-162.5 PILOT-75 2.0n/s 19psi - 23psi LOW- 1-1/2 HIGH- 0 ACCEL PUMP ON PTO CARB

You take the xcellerator pump off carb, and clean it?

What are you considering 1 turn on the low speed? If you were to mark the adjuster and you turned it, would it come back to the same spot or would it be opposite from where it started? Sorry if confusing!

if i marked it it would be 360 degree for 1 turn, took reed valves out nothing wrong with them measured them and checked for any marks or chips all fine the one thing i have noticed is that the exhaust has a wet oily tar like substance in it help running out of ideas now!
