You can run any oil in your ski but it just will not run for very long. The SeaDoo's are a different animal than the other skis. They make more horsepower per cc than the others, run more compression and run a rotary valve and thus require a different oil. These engines are running at their max output from the factory and need better lubrication than a TCW oil can provide. The TCW is more of an outboard oil that will see fewer rpm's and does not need to burn as clean because they do not have exhaust valves like the 787 and larger seadoos. You can get the seadoo oil shipped for free if you buy three gallons or more so the price is not much different. You have a high performance ski and need to feed it good oil to keep it alive.
Sorry to hijack but Is this the same for the 717? Just wondering.
i just picked up some fully synthetic xps for my 1996 gtx, hope this is ok?

Lou... Does the full synthetic keep rave valves cleaner?
Don't use anything but synthetic xps oil if you want your machine to last long.
Not to argue but i have two super walmarts within 10 miles of me and neither one carry the quicksilver synthetic or semi synth. They only have the non api-tc rated oil.I use SeaDoo XPS-2 full synthetic in my ski's with 787 (rave valves). FYI Quicksilver PWC, API-TC both synthetic blend and full synthetic is available at most Walmart Superstores, so the "I can't find it just doesn't fly".

yes its true for the 717 but unlike the 787 you can run mineral oil in the 717... just make sure its API-TC
