Hi from NZ - My 2007 C180 is due any day now and I want to get it a service before heading out. Which oil should I use. I read no synthetics allowed but on other sites see BRP have a semi-synthetic oil some say are ok. I don't want to risk damaging the SC so any advice appreciated. :confused:Thanks guys.

The BRP Semi synthetic oil is the newest oil out for BRP, and is totally fine to run in your supercharged boat. I believe they are going to (if they already haven't) phase out the standard mineral oil and only offer the semi and full synthetic oils. I have been using it in my RXP for a while now, and like it much more than the mineral oil.

Synthetic....!

This guy has way to many skis listed in his avatar to be able to afford synthetic (semi) oil. Synthetics are expensive........J/K, thanks for helping in the forum. We can always use good mechanics!....

The reason you hear that you aren't suppose to use synthetic oils in the supercharged engines is because it's too slippery. Mineral oil will lubricate the clutch washers without causing them to overslip. The downside to that is the synthectic oils is a lot better for your bearing surface than the mineral is. Mineral oil is easily burnt, synthectics are not.

I have heard that a "semi-synthetic" oil was in the making but not that it was already available. I'll see what I can dig up on it...........But, if it is available and it's by BRP, just make sure it IS acceptable to use with your supercharged engine.

I just did a quick check up at my fav links, including BRP and don't see this available yet. Derrick, if you have a link to this product and it's uses, please send it to me via PM........thanks!

LOL! Yeah, and I couldnt list all of them either,. When you've been in the industry as long as I have, you tend to get a little "collection" going, and its hard to part with some of them. A little background on myself, I've been in the industry since 1992, been riding since 1979... Yes, I was 9 when I started riding :hurray:. I am a Level 2 BRP tech for Sea-Doo PWC & Sport Boat, Can-Am ATV & Spyder Roadster, Kawasaki Jet Ski Master Tech, and Yamaha 5 star Tech. I love what I do for a living, and have met some pretty cool people in this industry. I went out to the shop & snapped a pic of the bottle of oil, and the label on the back (it's a little blurry, sorry). Hope this helps you locate the proper oil for your boat.

Good deal....

Wow, ....I don't know how I missed it but yes, it's usable in all 4-TEC engines including the supercharged. It's about dog gone time........synthetic is all I use in everything I own, even my chainsaw (o.k., it came with it when I bought it.....LOL). Anyone looking to purchase and switch to the Semi-Synthetic oil the SKU number on it is #293600121.

I remember riding at nine. We had an ole mini bike (no suspension) with a 3 hp Tecumseh engine on it. I beat the trails with it till my paw got me my first dirt bike. It was a Honda 175. I loved dirt bike racing, till I got run over anyway. Then I wussed out..........

Went to boatin instead. I have lived on Dog river most of my natural born life. When I was a kid, I think our cliche had the same name every river around who has kids on it call themselves, "The River Rats"........LOL

I still slalom (my first love), kneeboard, wake (on occasion) and tube.....I haven't barefooted in over 10 years now. I don't want to break nothing. I'm not real old, just real cautious now. I'm 50.

thanks Guys - Looks like I'll go for the semi synthetic if I can get some - I also read BRP is rebranded castrol- Is there any truth to that as I can bet one is way more expensive than the other!

Rebranded?....

No, I don't think they do. I might be wrong and don't have the specifics on it. I have heard this before but to me, it's like a rumor.

BRP does use a high quality oil manafacturer for their base product but they use their own additives. Rotax engineers have their own research and development department and deside on what's best to lubricate and protect their motors.

Now, that doesn't mean that Castrol is not the manafacturer that they get their base stock from. I don't know that. I would think it's some kind of "trade secret"..........

I'll have to dig on that one, see what I can learn.......

I have ran into the same issue, I couldn't even find the mineral oil anywhere, found out that the mineral oil is being phased out and no one had any mineral left on shelves, so I went with the semi synthetic and seems to be working out pretty well
