hey guys, ive had my 96xp 787 for a couple years and now want to start modding. I just purchased an r&d 85/88 nozzle kit and beach house sponsons from 99spxxx on here. Next im looking to completely overhaul my jet pump, then get a nice impeller (skat or solas). Next im looking for an intake grate but just dont know which one to choose...

I ride in choppy waters 85% of the time, i dont want a grate thats extremely aggressive thats going to kill 5mph off my top end or anything like that, I just want a happy medium grate. All your suggestions are greatly appreciated guys! Thank you much.

PS: im thinking about snagging this one, would this work for me?

I can't speak for the R&D, but I have a jet dynamics and my ski completely stock will still gps 56 to 57 mph at 6850 rpm. Ask around about which prop to get that will complement the nozzles. I know the X0 is supposed to get more top speed and I believe those nozzles are supposed to do the same. With a X0 and nozzles you might kill your bottom end. The other popular prop is the skat trak 17/22 and its supposed to be the hole shot prop, but will scrub some speed off the top. Maybe some of the vets can clarify this because i'm wanting a prop for mine now.

The jet dynamics intake grate will forsure scrub off top speed in calm to flat conditions but in rough conditions it will actually gain top speed because of the rough water hook up. Nozzles and a prop will help with top speeds. I personally see no issue with a xo and 85/88 nozzles tho you will loose rpm if you don't have a pipe. I would actually recommend the 87/90 or 87/89 nozzles they will help get your rpm's back. If you go with a skat get the 16/23 the 17/22 always had a little cavitation on the low end. The 16/23 did not

Don't waste your money on an R&D, except for being a couple of pounds lighter it's virtually the same as stock.

Hate to disagree with ya but the r& d is way better than stock I raced a complete season with one and had no problems with hook up. But what do I know I just race and ride in rough conditions.

Maybe R&D makes more than one model for the X-4, mine looks just like the stock grate.

Yep, that's the grate I have, the one I took off looks the same, doesn't have the R&D logo and was painted black, I guess I swapped an R&D for a lighter R&D. I just looked up the part and you are correct, the stock grate doesn't have the scoop.

There were a lot of knock offs made of these grates and the solas grates. But yes any scoop grate is better than stock. Stock is basically two bars that do nothing almost like having no grate.

Here you guys go, I posted the catalogs for the R&D stuff and the U.M.I. stuff a while back. The R&D one looks close the same as the U.M.I. except for the notch in the middle of the scoop. I ran the U.M.I. grate on my 96 back in the day and it was a night and day difference. In mild/heavy chop and wake echo off the banks of the river it performed very very well. I always stayed hooked up, this is where I could pull away from other 96's. I'd say it's a good grate for a rec rider for sure. If you do get a one, make sure on your carbon ring set-up you replace the o-ring that holds the stainless side of the seal to the drive shaft with the updated stainless steel c-clip. I almost sank my ski because of the o-ring, the grate packed so much water in it pushed the stainless part towards the PTO and the water was just flooding in. You want to make sure item #7 is the stainless clip.

thats great info to know racerxxx!!

1995hx i may go with the r&d grate but am still looking for everyones opinions

Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated guys! thank you

minnetonka4me, is there a particular model from jet dynamics or inventioneering that i need to be looking for?
Also am i gonna loose excessive top end with one of these grates or will the nozzle and impeller make up for it?

I've ran a few different grates and the worx maxiloader is my favorite. It seems to hook up a little better than the r&d in small to medium chop. If you ride consistently rough waters I'd consider a jet dynamics.

Hold on now. The Avenger is another size of Jet Dynamics grate. I hauled off and bought one and it will not fit the 96 XP. It is either made to go with the ride plate that JD made or it goes on the earlier models.

Chester came on a while back and taught us that the #6 is the least aggressive of the JD grates. I have bought everyone I've seen on the used market since. It does not rub off much top speed for the hook up it provides.

I don't understand why it didnt fit they are designed for the x4

Matt you were just the guy i was hoping to see post in my thread, as i was doing research on the forum and it appears you know alot about the jet dynamics grate. How bout the number 17 grate. Would that work for me and what i got?

Sure it would just get a hand held GPS to measure before and after top speed. If you ride in chop it's just going to feel a lot better (staying hooked up) so who cares if you loose 1 or 2 mph up top.

I'll try and remember to get a pic tomorrow of the Avenger next to the regular ones so we can see what's up with that.

I would suggest getting a tiny tach or TTO tach and a gps when you start doing these mods. In reality everbodies ski is different and depending on the weather is also going to dictate performance. If you have a tach and a gps you can do the mods and see which combo gives you the best performance. I'd do a baseline run stock, then one with the grate, then one with the grate and nozzles.
