When should a Supercharger be rebuilt

Looking at buying a 2003 seadoo gtx 4tec with a supercharger on it. It's got 120 hours on it. I've heard the superchargers need to be rebuilt sometimes. The owner said as long as he's owned it it's never been rebuilt. Do you guys think this one needs to be or should be rebuilt and how expensive is it for them to be rebuilt?

Yes it's needs to be done asap. If the ceramic washers come apart it can ruin the motor. It will cost you $300-$1000 depending on how much of the work you do yourself.

Given that it's peak riding season the fact that the rebuild has not been done kills the resale value of that ski.

Anything 07 and older has ceramic washers. 08 is SUPPOSE to be metal but we have seen some 08's come through with the ceramic washers. So ANYTHING with ceramic washer no matter the hours on it needs to at the very least have the ceramic washers replaced. In many cases it is worth rebuilding it as you are paying a good portion of the labor just in replacing the washers.

Once you KNOW you have good washers. They should be rebuilt every 100 hours.

DO NOT BUY that ski unless you know for sure that the SC has not let go already. At a minimum, remove the input hose and try to spin the SC with your fingers. If it spins freely, forget that ski. If not, and all seems tight, put the hose back on and start the engine and give the throttle a rap with your hand around the output hose on the SC. If you feel it expand (boost is present) you are probably ok. But do not ride the ski before you R&R the SC for a rebuild and use the $500 it's gonna cost you as a negotiating tool.

Ceramics started with the 04 model year 03 models had a different clutch set up that would get weak which resulted in excessive slip and low to no boost but no ceramics to worry about.

It's a good idea to rebuild the supercharger but no worry about ceramics and the inherant damage they can cause with an 03 model. Two years or 100hours is the recommended rebuild interval.

Ok, I'm on the same situation. Gtx 2004 supercharged.

The SC stills stock with ceramic washers (timing bomb).

Just choose to buy a new one.

They say 100hours or 2 years, bur if you have ceramics (much probably), better dont hesitate to change it now.

It's $415 with our Sea-Doo Supercharger Rebuild Service, and if it's original as other have said it MUST be rebuild before riding again.

If it were me purchasing, I'd remove the supercharger prior to buying and make sure the washers are still there and not loose inside the engine. That, or make a stipulation in the deal that if the washers are in the engine that they'll take it back. If they are in place, it's no big deal to get it rebuild and right now we are shipping them back out the day after we receive them so it's a quick turn around.
