I like the 787 'cause that's what I have.

Yes, thread is almost 2 yrs old. Only 7 people voted but 5 liked the 787 best. Not counting the posters.

I guess I never really voted on this.

I vote for the 720 engine.

It's bullet proof... and still makes good power for it's size.

It's kinda become a toss up for me between the 720 and the 787. The real workhorse is the 720, practically no maintenance, but for a little more maintenance the 787 has 25 more HP. Both top out about the same, the 787 just gets there quicker. I guess it I had to choose it would still be the 720, good power, good torque.

BTW I have both.

Well since you sort of left the question open and didn't specify marine 2 stroke engines....I will have to go with my 1997 Yamaha TZ250 GP race bike. That thing was totally awesome, total weight of the bike was 270 lbs and the motor put out close to 80 rear wheel hp!! The best thing about the motor was that you could pull the whole tranny out in less then 5 minutes!!

Only takes FS oil which costs more.
I love my 720. Its in my boat and the two skis I got. Very easy to work on and less parts to go bad. I don't want the problems with the chance of rave dropping a cylinder, the cleaning of the valve, the tuning and rpm issues in the midrange.
I initially bought the boat b/c I knew of the ease of rebuilding two strokes and/or the cost of replacement if ever I needed was 1K.

Love my 787. Some decent power, not high maintenance, been stone dead reliable. 2 stroke and fuel mileage don't belong in the same sentence. My 255 hp 1.5 liter is twice the size with more than twice the power gets twice the mileage at 30 mph :D

717, cheap cheap cheap. Mine froze under previous ownership, so much so that it cracked the outside of jug #2 and bulged jug #1. Both cylinders right at 150psi and pass leak down checks with flying colors. Runs great, simple magneto ignition. Slightly cheaper oil.

Used in more models than any other engine. (not counting the 587 or 657, they had the unfair advantage of being the only two available for years :p ) http://www.seadoosource.com/engineref.html http://www.seadoosource.com/boatengineref.html Not saying that website is entirely acurate, but it looks good for my vote. ;)

p.s. I would go with the 787 for reliable performance, and the 951 for top performance.
