What ride gear do you use?

After looking at Minnetonka4me's ice river gear today I realized I don't have a clue what experienced riders wear. I thought all you needed was shorts and a vest. How often do most wear helmets, shoes, gloves and other gear. Also curious what electronic gadgets folks wear or carry. Some photos would be cool.

Shorts, a vest, and good quality sandals. (hat and sun block if I'm going to be out all day)

When I was in SoCal... I had a short (spring) wet suite because the Ocean water was cold, even during the summer. In PA... by the time the air is warm enough for me to want to go on the water... the water is also warm enough.

Also... I use to buy "Name Brand" wet shoes... but they ALL SUCK !!!!! I bet I never got more than one season out of a legit pair of wet shoes. So... about 13 years ago... I bought a pair of sandals. The style that goes over your foot, and has a clasp around the top of your foot, and they are still going strong !!!! Not to mention... they stay on your feet when you fall off the ski... they give better traction on the rocks... and you can get the sand/rocks out easier.

What kind of hat? My wife got a kick laughing at me when I got off the ski as I looked like Doc Brown in "Back to the Future!"

Hey Doc,

I hear yah on the wet shoes, I will say however the new balance minimus things work pretty good and hold up well. I've got two seasons out of em and they look new still.

we usually buy 2 or 3 pairs of cheap water shoes each -- usually about 6 - 8 bucks, keep a pair in truck, when you eat lunch, change em, keep another pair in ski, when they fill up with sand and rocks, bad -- on the feet, then when you get home and wash ski, you rinse em all out, between me and wife, we rinse out about 4 pair usually, and when you buy em like that cheap, and rotate the use, they last all season, and longer usually ...and in the winter, you can pick em like for about 5 bucks ...

I agree about the sandals. I bought a pair that are waterproof and have Velcro straps. They hold up very well. I've tried several brands of shoes they don't last and end up smelly!

I bought a pair of neoprene boots last year during the WCSS black Friday sale. I used them last Saturday for the first time they worked great in the cold water, my feet stayed dry.

Lou

Nike Featherlite Hat (because it has adjustable velcro on the back to tighten the hat)
fingerless gloves if i'm hitting waves
shorts & life jacket.
flippy floppy's go in the storage bin.

For shows I have found that the canvas style saddles with the rear heal strap and the very light weight hiking shoes work best.

Both designed for water and you can tighten them on your feet. I spend about 50 bucks on them but they are good until you want something new. I have NEVER damaged a pair as of yet.

For me it all depends on the weather..

in the summmer I use a pair of water shoes, shorts, neoprene vest, jet pilot gloves, and last but not LEAST.. And I'm surprised I haven't heard more guys talk about these... A pair of SeaSpecs glasses

fall/winter ill go out in a full wet suit, wet suit jacket, boots, something to cover my face.. and vest.

EDIT: i didnt fully read your origional post.. when i had my spx i used wet shoes every time i went out after the first time.. i felt the stock flood boards on the xp and spx are too slippery to not wear shoes.. land the wrong way and you can easly find your self off the ski..

new newest and BEST gadget i have for my ski is a cheap but effiecent GPS.. not only does it tell me an accurate MPH reading... but it stores way points and can safely navigate me back to the dock if i ever get lost.. and trust me if you get caught out on the open water and it starts to rain.. your GOING to get lost (ask me how i know)... and is something happens to you out on the water and you start taking on water it will tell you your most accurate longitude and latitude points to direct help.. take a look at the garmin 76.. its what i have an HIGLY suggested.. its an oldie but a goodie

Good point in the GPS. I just bought and have yet to use the Etrex which is the newer version of the 76 series.

Thanks Matty and everyone else for the posts. I didn't have shoes last Sunday and can see how it would be good for traction and to keep your foot stable on decel & turns.

Don't have a neoprene vest or gloves but will consider getting some. Just went online and found the SeaSpecs glasses are available in prescription lenses for $195. Will definitely look into getting a pair. Also if anyone wants a non-prescription set they are $50 each and with the current special you get 3 sets for the price of two ($100) at www.seaspecs.com.

I would think with the bill on a Nike cap it would be constantly be blowing off & sinking. Guess I could do a Dale junior and turn it backwards!

I have been planning on getting a GPS, thanks for the recommendations.

I love my sea specs.
I found a set on eBay for 20 bucks.

Lost two of them already.

Also, you can find long sleeve rash guards on eBay too. The short ones leave you tan lines.

after losing,,, I dunno, 7 or 8 hats... I found some of the nike feather lite's at the nike outlet store for $5 clearance, so I bought all 4 that they had on the rack...

what I LIKE about this particular ball cap, is that it has a velcro attachment on the back, vs the normal pin/hole things, so you can velcro it down real tight on your head for a speed run, then when you slow down or stop, you can easily just reach back and loosen it a bit so you don't end up with a headache. you will still occasionally lose a hat, but I still have three of my 4 left :)

i looked on the interwebz but there are 999 pic's of the hat, but none on the back... but trust me, it works.. and I hate hate hate riding without a hat, its so nice to keep the sun out of your eyes (I have rx sunglasses too) and your nose from burning.

also, it doesn't sink. it floats, and the hat's are really really well made, i know this because about 5 months ago my hat blew off (not tight enough) and I was with a group of 5 so I jammed a 180 and headed back to get it fast and catch up with the group, ran the dam thing over and sucked it into my pump, and it took us 20 minutes to get it out of the pump the plastic bill was extremely tough !

LOL, sounds like Murphy's law is working just fine! Thanks for the info, I'll have to pick one up.

Spim, are these the hats you wear? Found this one yesterday at a Nike outlet by me. On the outside it says Dri Fit, but on the inside it does say featherlite. It's got the velcro on the back. I didn't get the deal you got, the outlet store only marked it down $2, from $22 to $20. I swear most of the outlet stores really aren't outlet stores, I think it's just another way for these places to sell stuff. Will try it out this weekend!

yes,, thats the hat.... ! I told my wife that if she stumbles across the clearance deal at the outlet store again to buy every $5 hat they have... I really like that hat ! I probably own about 15 ball caps, and the nike ones are the only hat I wear for a good 2 years now... had it on last night for a beach walk.. and again,,, what I do, is wear it normal tightness (semi loose) for just sitting around, but when i'm about to make a speed run, i just reach back one handed, release the velcro, pull it real snug, then pat it down tight, and its really snug and hard to blow off... then when we slow down or stop, i just reach back and loosen it up a bit for comfort....

and the hat strap isn't a bad idea actually, i never have seen one for sale anywhere... how much do they run ?

has anybody ever tried the ones with the big flaps in the back to protect the back of your neck from sunburn ?

All for year round of riding

:p

I bought a 2piece Oneil wet suit , shorty w/ longjohn...add the wet suit boots...neoprene gloves and hood...leaves only face exposed.

In the summer I only wear the shorty...keeps the chaffing between the knees (from the seat)to a minimum...no shoes while riding.
I wear Teva sandals on the docks...never go barefoot on the docks...some mighty big azz splinters...and they're fckn painful too.
