Hi,
today i've picked up my Seadoo XP 99 from the storage. Because I just wanted it to run for a couple of minutes to make sure it's ready for a new season. I installed the old battery (wich I charged last week), openend the fuelline and tried to start it with some choke. Unfortunally it did not start. After some checks I found out there was very weak to none sparks in the beginning and later on no sparks at all. I've measured the battery and normalit is 12,4V and during starting it drops to 8,5V.
Now i'm planning to go to the shop next week and buy a new battery and spark plugs.
My question is: can a weak battery cause these problems ???

ps: starting sounds ok, and the last time the seadoo ran was 2,5 months ago with no problems.

Yup, a low battery can definitely cause low spark. I had made the mistake of buying a cheap acid filled battery, and that same thing happened to me. Couldnt get it to spark. Change the battery and I bet it will start and spark good again.

Hi & Welcome to the forum.

You are correct to buy a new battery. Volts during the starting process should be around 11.0 or so, yours is about 8.5, so it's time to replace the battery.

Is it getting warmer in the Netherlands now....still under the freezing point here in Michigan.

Thanks guys,
very helpful answers, I hate it when I have a problem without really knowing what caused it. So thanks for putting my mind at ease.
Will report back in a couple of weeks when i've put in the new battery and spark plugs.

Well it's around zero here as well seadoobuddy, but one can never be too early with getting ready for beter times!!;)
Don't wanna waste my time when it's weather for on the water!!

Change out the battery and it should be good to go. Hey seadoobuddy, it is cold but that didnt stop 42000 people from buying tigers tickets today. I tried buying 8, they went on sale at 10am but i have 2 smartphones an ipad and a laptop logged in ot the virtual waiting room at 9:30, at 10:04 my ipad was a lucky random draw, I tried to buy 8 tickets for opening day but they only allowed 4 so I checked 4 and hit best available and it showed 0 available, I kept refreshing and 1 minute later 4 standing room only tickets popped up. It then said I had 3 minutes to complete the order or I would lose them. Sounds easy enough. Next page had to create an account, basic stuff email address, verify email address, password, verify password. Next page credit card and billing info. Name, address, credit card info. Filled it all oit with 14 seconds to spare, hit pay now, all of a sudden the page reloads and says I missed the shipping option, 10 secs left, i franticly look for the shipping options and find them which all are free except overnight(which who overnights something for an event a month away). So i check mail them, hit pay. Oh yeah time expired your tickets are no longer available. Keep refreshing, 2 minutes later, screen says this date is no longer available and the site actually kicks you over to stub hub. The going rate for a standing room only ticket for opening day on stubhub $115 each. My order for 4 was about 125, i was going to have to buy four from stub hub too but now 8 will be $920 where if I could have picked up some from the tigers site it would have only been $585. Sorry about getting off topic just had to vent a little.

The Jays are winning it anyway.....:leaving:

Back to the battery questions....is there an issue buying a stronger battery than the manual states?

No issues, 12v is 12v, the stronger batterys just have more storage capacity and cranking amps.

To charge it if its dead, yes. But just to maintain full charge it shouldn't matter at all. It might just take a bit longer to recover from starting.

The CDI doesn't like anything below 9v.

I always go with a larger battery, 300-350 cold cranking amps is a minimun amount for these skis. Those tiny batteries are easily fried if you have to crank for very long, and it's harder on the starter motor as well. I saw a guy who ruin a brand new recommended size battery b/c his ski quit running and he used the starter to get him back to shore, 30 ft or so.

My boat has a 500cca connected to the 951 Rotax, and in v8 boats I go with 1000cca, they typically last 10 years or more.
