Hey guys,

New x4 owner here and pretty pumped to get this bad boy out on the lake. Anyway, I am completely new to this platform and 2 stroke skis in general. I have had 2 stoke ATV's so I am pretty familiar with them in a general sense. Anyway, I picked up a used 96 XP today and have slowly been looking it over trying to figure out what goodies are on it since the previous owner bought it on a whim and decided he wanted a 4tec instead. I guess I am asking for a "what should I look for" list of common mods and how to tell them from stock.

So far I have found:
UMI steering with renthal bars
UMI finger throttle
Rossier Pipe
Novi Carbs
TDR waterbox
choke removed for primer
converted to premix
twist sponsons
aftermarket prop (any way to tell which one without removing?)
Aluminum aftermarket nozzle not sure on the size
stock ride plate
tiny tach
aftermarket start/stop push button
aftermarket trim tabs
blacktip mats and seat cover
R&D intake manifold

Sounds like more of a statement then a question. Get us some pics and we will finish the list. I'm glad you got it.

Check the plugs, make sure it's properly tuned. Did you check compression or do a water test before buying?

It was pouring rain when inwent to pick it up 6 hours away so there was no turning back at that point. Figured it was worth it in parts alone worst case.

It's got a carrier bearing not a carbon ring. I thought maybe it was a 95 but it's definitely a 96.

Any downfall to a carrier bearing opposed to the carbon? Why would I have a carrier and not the stock car on one?

I am not a fan of carbon rings. I've seen too many skis sink because of them. All Yamaha's run a carrier bearing setup. Some of the earlier Seadoo's used a carrier bearing and I have no clue why Seadoo switch to the carbon ring. My guess is cost. Some say maintenace because carrier bearings need to be greased, especially in a salt water environment. On a fresh water lake though its a non issue. I have never had a single issue with a carrier bearing, but I have been on a Seadoo ski and jetboat that went the way of the Titantic. None of my personal carbon ring skis have ever had a problem, but I just hate the fact that if it fails then youre screwed. No bilge pump on earth will save your ass from the tsunami water that floods in when a carbon ring fails.

Yea, I like the carrier bearing too, be glad it's there and grease it once in a while. Also the strainer is an awesome addon. I want to get one for my skis to keep the sand out of them. Had several engine failures, and I'm 99% positive is from the crap that got in and blocked my cylinder drain hose. Just keep an eye on the strainer and empty it periodically.

New mod found!

Just saw it has an aluminum nozzle as well.

Took it out for its first ride and OMG I'm in love. Definitely gave me a workout but what a blast! Tiny tach showed right at 7k rpms at wot at top speed.

ONLY downfall is if you completely neglected it and it locked up. Just grease it every couple of riding hours and you'll be good. I swapped my 96 from carbon to carrier cause I had a cavitation issue and it was pissing water into the hull.

also noticed a small bilge pump in the rear of the hull with a separate switch on the dash. I ran it yesterday with it off and it seemed fine, just a little water after pulling the plug

I was actually successful in restoring my carbon seal by putting some 800 grit sandpaper onto a flat surface and wet sanding the imperfections away. The drive system is pretty picky about having the two rubber bumpers, one on each end of the drive shaft. If you have that, the carbon seal system works pretty well. If it leaks, you can usually add a little tension by sliding the accordion boot fwd a bit and retightening the clamps.

ok so I did a little more investigating into the ski. Turns out the VTS setup is completely gone, ripped out and cut out.

The fuel selector has been completely disabled/bypassed

There are no wires coming out of the fuel sending unit to hook up to the fuel gauge. and none of the gauges work

Anything else I should check for? I was runnin 7k rpms yesterday but today only got up to 6800 and it feels much more sluggish today. All I did was put in some 93 mixed with interceptor at 40:1

Ride it with the seat off and you might see water or fuel peeing out. Get a feel for how hot things are in there when warmed up so you know if things are too hot. Periodically the little brass restriction jet under the 1/2" fitting will clog with a little piece of debris. There is one in the stinger to check also.

Man I wish there were some local experts by me, lol

While driving it, I did feel the hull a little hot near my left foot. Is that normal?

Where would I look for water/fuel peeing out of?

The drop in WOT RPM is probably from the hot weather we had here in NY last few days. I was out today on the Hudson, 93 degrees and humid as hell. All I could get was 6750. 3 days ago it was a lot cooler air and I was at 6850. Try it again in cooler weather and I bet you'll be back up to 7k.

Everywhere there is to look. You did put a cap back on that flush fitting I see open in your engine pic, right?

yes flush cap is installed

i did notice the mag plug boot kept coming loose. I bought a new one to install. could that be the issue on slow acceleration from idle and wot rpms?

Yes it could be and darn dangerous to have sparking under the seat. They screw on till they won't screw anymore. Clip a little off to get to shiny wire and put a little dielectric grease in the boots. Zip tie them tight to the wire after that.
