Bought a '97 speedster last year and have been giving it the attention it's been missing from the PO. One of the weed gate cables was broken where the solid wire is crimped into the shaft that goes to the front actuator assembly. I guess those cables are not available anymore so I decided to fix it. I removed the old broken wire piece, about a half inch long, by cutting a slit the length of the crimp with a Dremel and cut-off wheel. Then I filled in the slit with with a MIG welder and some stainless. I ground it round again and drilled the hole back in the end for the wire. I crimped the wire in place and for an extra measure I tacked it in with tiny spot of weld. Working the gate by hand under the boat I noticed it was very stiff, probably what caused it to break in the first place. I wanted to get some lube down all the way to the gate but dripping it in the front end just wasn't going to do it. I needed some pressure to force it all the way down so I clamped a vinyl hose over the entire cable assembly and put a couple tablespoons of motorcycle cable lube in it. I clamped an air fitting to the end and gave it about 20psi and could here a slight hissing down by the gates. I let it sit for awhile until all the fluid had gone down the cable and made it all the way to the end. Gates work much easier now.
