Wear Ring/Steering Cable removal

I have one more question on this topic. I've got the Wear ring off and I also had no issues removing the nut in the top left hand corner but now the wear ring is dangling on the steering cable. The shift cable was easy to remove because of the way it was attached to the wear ring housing. Can the end of the shift cable be disassembled so I can slide off the wear ring? I feel stupid.

I'll have to go look again tomorrow. I was afraid of breaking it. Are you able to elaborate a bit how they come off?

Take a look at this picture the top arrow points to the nuts you need to remove, then you can tap out the steering cable holder which the other arrow is point to. This is also another area that you should spray with PB Blaster and let it sit, then some Silicone because there is a plastic shoe inside the wear ring that helps in holding the shifter cable and preventing the dissimilar metal corrosion. Then work on tapping it with some wood and a hammer to get it out. Once you get it out make note of where it is because it will thread back and forth so you can adjust if the boat moves forward or aft when in neutral.

You misunderstood. I had no trouble taking off the wear ring. I made my own homemade puller and got it off. That nut you point to in the photo is already off so that is not my problem either. Right now the only thing preventing me from taking that wear ring with me is the fact that it is still dangling from the the cable on the left because I can't figure out how to take the cable apart.

Well that was easy! This morning it came apart just like I figured it should. I don't know why yesterday it seemed like I was putting too much effort into it and I thought I was gonna damage it. Better to be safe than sorry. I am please to say that my parts look like they are in fantastic shape compared to some of the photos I have seen here. I have some deep pitting in the wear ring and I will give it the JBweld fix. I really don't think any impeller work is necessary at this time.
Thanks for your help!
