Wear Ring and Pump Rebuild

I have a 20 ton press I use along with the sbt tool that seats both the bearings and the double lip seal to the correct depth(critical). I now also have a tool that another member on here makes that can push out the old bearings. I punched my pump bearings out by hand last time and wound up putting a burr in the housing. When I press d the new bearings in the burr put pressure on the bearing case and had a rough spot when I spun the impeller. That cost me another set of bearings and had to file down the burr. Always pays to have the correct tools to do the job right the first time!

Thinking back to the old automotive days, we used to get a socket or a section of pipe that would be slightly smaller than the journal ID.

I will check out the SBT tool, Thanks. What about the "pusher-outer" tool?

BIG help. Thanks.

Couple Q's ...
1. I am not sure I visualize the bearing puller with the 1/2 inch bolt. Does the Double D washer flats fit thru the bearing ID, then straighten out and then you thread it on? What is the purpose of the small bushing ( or socket) under the Double D? What size socket is that?

2. I have a Delta Drill press. It is certainly not a replacement for an arbor or shop press, but it will certainly produce 300 - 500 lbs of load. Is that close to your Craftsmen?

Dave, 1) yeah, drop the D washer thru the bearing, place against the back side of it, drop the bolt thru the D also from the back, thread over the socket and nut, and tighten the nut to pull the brg. The "small bushing" is actually the pump bearing. It's a shell-type needle bearing. I use a 1" or 1 1/16" socket, 1/2 drive. It wants to be just slightly smaller than the pump seal, so that it seats well against the pump in the seal recess.

I had new parts on hand, so was able to measure 'em for stuff I needed to make.

2) Wish my Crafstman was close to your Delta. It's old and tired :) I expect your Delta will do the job. Little pump oil on the brg OD, it don't take that much to push 'em in.

Great info! So that is actually the inner race of the bearing?

I assume you pull out the seal and bearing together on the backside? Or do you take out the seal first?

Acutally the outer race. The pump shaft runs direct against the needles.

Looks like you could go either way, together or seal first. Once you get the impeller and shaft out, its easy to see what'll work and what won't.

I wouldn't try to put 'em IN together :)

Thanks, again. Fabulous info.

I will have to make up a Double D.

When I get all the parts, I will shoot some pics and vids.

Howd you make out with the pump rebuild? May be doing one on my gsx ltd and could use the info.

I haven't ordered the parts yet. Life got in the way. I will rebuild it over the winter and post some pics on the process.

Ya. Got the impeller tool from OSD, think I will buy the rebuild kit and wear ring from them too. I like @Lake Sailer's bearing removal tool.
