Just bought a 2006 Speedster with about 60 hrs. Caught the rope in the drive shaft. Cut it out and boat seemed fine. Then started engine in 2 ft of water (operating manual seemed to indicate this was ok) and sucked in a handful of gravel. Pulled it all out. Didn't seem to greatly damage the impellor or wear ring (looked at it from both sides). Next time out, big cavitation at 5 mph and taking on a lot of water.
I know the wear ring is no longer pristine, and same for the impeller, but I'm thinking such bad cavitation is likely an air leak from the boat. So I think I damaged at least the shaft seal based on what I read from other posts. Is it likely to be a loose seal which I can tighten, or will it require a full seal replacement.?
Also, has anyone seen a screen that can be added to the intake to reduce gravel and debris (like ropes). I'd be prepared to give up a little performance to reduce these events from happening (recognizing that operator error also was a big part of it). I've seen other jet intakes with smaller slots).
If I take it to a shop, what a likely number of hours that a mechanic will charge to fix a seal, impeller and wear ring?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts or suggestions of previous posts.
