Water coming from jet intake grate area (water hose connected)

I wanted to make sure that my boat ran before I took it to the lake. I properly hooked a hose up to the cooling system and turned it on. I saw water coming from the intake grate at the bottom of the boat. My battery was dead so the boat never started. I thought the water would come out of the small drain hole like usual. Is something messed up? Is it safe to run my boat like this? The boat is a 2001 seadoo challenger 2000 with a mercury mariner 210 hp.

When first reading your post I thought you had mistakingly turned on the water before starting the engine. This is a no-no with the 2-stroke or 4-Tek engines. You mention you have the Mercury engine. On those the water should be on before starting the motor, so you did things correctly.

The Mercury engines are self draining and you would see water coming from the jet pump area when on the hose. It sounds okay to me. In the future, questions about your boat should be made in the Mecury powered boat section of the forum. Good luck to you.

I moved this thread, and deleted the other. That will help keep things from getting convoluted.

The merc engines are self draining... so it's not an issue, if it didn't start. Also... yes... it's normal to see the bulk of the water come from the jet pump, while on the hose... since that's the normal water pickup, and the hose is "Back Flushing" it.

Anyway... get the battery charged, and start it up. I'm sure it will be fine.

It is normal, or at least it happens that way on my Seadoo Islandia as well. Especially when not running. When running the system pumps water through, and the water comes out of the small brass drain hole as well as the pump and the exhaust. When not running the water seeks that lowest spot and comes out the grate.
