I absolutely love my '07 Utopia...BUT... I tried wakesurfing for the first time this weekend and LOVED it. So, to set the stage for my post:
- I have absolutely no inclination to buy a $60K-$130K purpose built wakeboarding/wakesurfing boat (unless I win the lottery)...yet
- I completely understand that the Utopia, being a two engine jet boat, puts out a wake that is not well-suited to wakeboarding and most certainly wakesurfing
So, with the understanding that the wake behind my Utopia will never be as good as the one behind the Mastercraft I was introduced to wakeboarding behind this past weekend, does anyone have any experience with using FatSac type ballast on a 4-Tec Utopia? I'm looking for advice on placement. Would it help to put a ballast bag in the center ski locker? Does anyone have experience mounting a large FatSac on one side of the swim platform? How big a FatSac has anyone put on a Utopia, and did the end justify the expense and struggle to mount it securely? Can you even get up on a wakesurf board using the stock rope attach point at the back of the boat, or is attaching the wakesurf rope to a tower a must?
I'll probably buy a 5+foot used wakesurf board and wakesurf tow rope, see what I can do with the stock setup, then start trying to load down one aft corner of the boat with people and see what happens. If I have any success with that approach, I'll look for inexpensive used FatSacs and give them a try. I'll definitely post the results of my experiments, but wanted to open up a line for others who have tried and failed, tried and given up, or tried and had some limited success at wakesurfing behind their Utopia to share their experiences.
