I was going about 30 on flat conditions then turned the engine off and on because I had to talk to someone. When I turned it on it was stuck between forward and reverse. Also the turning gets stiff when I try to accelerate. Top speed I can go is 4 and if I accelerate more it's 6,7, and u can hear the engine trying very hard. Switching forward and reverse doesn't do anything just keeps you going forward going slowly as I said. When this happen it was in clean saltwater 30+ ft deep. Any ideas what's wrong?

you have cavitation... if the engine rpms go up and you don't go anywhere, or very slowly, it's called cavitation, not stuck in between forward and reverse. if you don't have anything stuck in your pump(look from underneath through the intake grate, a small stick or rock can cause this), then your wear ring may have shredded or you lost your seal in your pump area.
