Viable excuses to those that want to ride my doo's

Reading the "another I let some one ride and my ski broke" thread, it reminds me of the yearly
stress I endure figuring out a way to tell other people (or people I don't offer the seadoo to)
that "No you can't take my seadoo out" without really offending them...

Where we go each year for a week is populated by relatives and casual friends - who over the
last 20 years have all had boats at varying times and I never once - not an exaggeration -
asked them to let me take their boat out (even when really wishing some quality alone
time with the wife in the middle of the lake....:reddevil:)

I'd be interested in knowing what viable (non-offending..:) ) excuses everyone here uses...so far
my best excuse is to ride away from the boats I'm out with when I know they want to take mine out..;)

New York makes it much easier; You must have a boater's safety certificate in your possession to operate a pwc.. If you don't, you get fined and the owner of the craft gets fined also. Most people are too darn lazy to take the 8 hour course!

We have that in BC too. Problem is- 90% of these people have the license.....:ack:

Mine is pretty easy. I spent 7 months restoring it, no one is riding it but me. :)

"i'm a little overprotective about my ski, sorry"

"its not running just right, its probably not a good idea right now"

I've used the 2nd one, Spim. That's a good one.

They probably walk away thinking "Man, those things never are running right..." :)

I guess I'm not the normal guy. More or less... I let anyone ride my skis. BUT... with that said... in PA you need a safety cert to operate a PWC. So... if they have one... then they get to ride.

OK... my skis are nice... but they aren't PERFECT. They have some nicks and chips... so I'm not worried about the cosmetics. But, anyone who rides needs to know they are responsible for any damage. (for a crash) But... if the engine gives out... I'm not going to hold someone responsible for that. They are old, and it's going to happen eventually. AND... since my skis run, spot-on... I know the engine didn't pop, just because someone held the throttle open.

I'm with the Doc on this one. I don't buy this stuff just for myself. I have shear enjoyment watching people buzz around on my skis. Exspecially the people that don't have an oportunity to do those type of activities on a regular basis. I love the smiles when they get back to the dock, It is such a treat for them.

That being said my skis are in good shape but not mint. I have 4 teenages too, they know to be carefull but mistakes do happen, usaully nothing major, so no sense me owing a mint or brand new one.
If I ever did a full resto that one would be off limits.

Yeah that's what my yammi is for. No one is touching my XP. Probably the only person I'd let touch it is my buddy who did a FULL XP resto on a 95 XP 800. Then I'd be riding his.....so it'd be safe to say it'd be ok. HAH!

I'm a terrible person lol.
I had two running ski's when we had a family reunion (my side) down here at the beach, 35 people, and I refused to bring the ski's and instead pitched in on a rental of two 4 strokes. there was no way I was bringing two ski's down for my family to beat up on lol. Then we had an easter sunday reunion with my wifes family just recently, the request was made by a couple family members, and I respectfully said, no thanks, we rented paddleboards instead. I have no issues with experienced riders taking a spin, but noobs on a modded XP in salt water? not a chance....

That's kind of my issue. Virtually none of these people have ridden one before, and the one year I was struggling to say no didn't
result in any damage but did result in a far higher gas bill - for me. Those that rode only rode for a shorter time but it all added up and no one was around when I went to gas them up...shocking I know.

Also keep in mind gas in Canada...on a lake Marina....is about $5.50-$6 per US Gallon. I quit slogging gas cans down to the beach
a few years ago. Besides with 2 GTX's I'd need about 4 or 5 cans to get the job done. It was more like a job at a rental place I imagine.

Gas here at a gas station is just under $4 a gallon for regular 87 octane and just over $4 for premium 91 octane. Now the 93 is less common now although it was at every gas station. For some reason they switched to 91 and it's at about $5 a gallon and the 100 octane is $2.69 a liter lol. I don't want to know how much gas costs at the marina

That's almost a different situation.

In that case... they would run non-stop, and they would be associated in a "Party" atmosphere. (drunken abuse) I would have also chipped in for a couple rentals that day.

$2.69 a litre!!! Yowza! That's $10.17 a US Gallon. Time to go to a canoe if that's what you'd have to run in these things.

In Canada, typically the marina cost is about 20-25 cents more per litre (76 - 95 cents a US Gal) but it's usually a mid-grade though but still a ripoff. I just got tired of lugging multiples of gas cans to the beach and struggling with pouring it (and usually overflowing a bit
every time...)

Over all I am with Doc in that I LOVE to have others use my ski/skis as the enjoyment I get from their enjoyment is huge.

That said, I still do as I said I do about getting them away from and back to the dock...

Yeah I probably use the "it aint running right" as my best bet. But I also tell people that I just dont trust anybody on my skis at all and its not personal. I will definitely let people ride, as long as I am there but the thing is people just dont trust other peoples stuff the same way you treat your own stuff.

I kinda relate it to this. Here in KC we get quite a bit of snow, so in the winter when Im driving you always "clack" the snow/slush/salt off your shoes when you get in your own car but when people get in they just hop in with shit all over them. People treat there own stuff with better care than when using someone else's stuff and when they want to use your equipment that has an ackronym of B.reak O.ut A.nother T.housand I just dont trust them unfortunately

LOL ! ya good point... but i've used it, and it works... and again, I almost never ride somebody else's ski unless I have a really really good reason...even if they offer.

The last time I borrowed a ski was because my daughter was in town and she really wanted to ride, so I called a friend and asked if he would join us for a ride (fuel & lunch are on me) and bring his second ski for me to ride, since my kid will be on my ski... his ski was for sale at the time, and I was so nervous about riding his ski, since I didn't want to damage it in any way, which kind of takes the fun out of a ride if you can't be silly :)

"i'm a little overprotective about my ski, sorry"

I've used 2.....
1. I require a $3,000 deposit first. (or more depending on your ski)

2. I have a special insurance rate that only allows me or my wife to drive it. .....this one works better.

I've used #2 sparingly (usually after looking around to see who else is there as that kind of flies out the window
when you let someone you trust ride it..!

I guess I'm down to "Nope sorry" and then shut up. You usually want to give an explanation for the decline but that
usually is the part that ends up ticking people off.

My 2nd main week at the cabin is with my friend/seadoo hobby partner/mechanic and he brings his own up and he has no
problem just saying "No" and then walking away. I'm sure his friendly face solves most issues.... ;)

RXT - you get the learning key, no excuses, and only if I know you're experienced.

GTXL- only if the wife lets you, it is hers after all.

GTS- I bought it cheap, put $25 into it. Go have fun, you crash it you bought it.

I should mention a few summers ago, one of this crew I go visit rented a seadoo, and with a younger kid (age 16 around)
riding it, was circling around a boat yapping with girls and ended up putting a $3000 crease in the boat...I have no idea
of the damage to the seadoo.
