trim tabs

Been doing some reading tonight and see some old post on trim tabs but no one ever really saying they work or not. I have single 787 seadoo 14.5 boat and use auto tabs by nautica. These things are the best. With out them I would get massive porpusing. With them it rarely, rarely, hop in the front, unless i cross a nice wake at 50 :)

I have the smallest ones they make on the second setting. When I take off the front end barely rises and I plane in seconds. I think it knocked off about a mile or two per hour but not having to cut the throttle and/or crank right/left to stop the hopping is like so worht it.

Any question let me know. Peace and happy boating this summer.

Will post later today after I get back from the lake. They work great. You will not be sorry.

Install is easy. not much room so you have to take your time and measure like three times just to be sure. I had to mount the one top bracket touching the bilge outlet fitting through the transom. The angle on the plate is perfect though.

This is the picture. The hardware kit came with plastic bolts and nuts. I used stainless with nylock nuts. Works great.

So you installed them yourself? Did you use 3M adhesive on and around the bolt holes to seal them up?

Have you tried a really sharp turn yet?

What about when you beach the boat for party time... do the tabs sit and rock in the sand? Could they cause an issue getting back off the beach ?

Tape would never hold. Imagine a tab like that with a 40lb push on it and the water hitting it at 50mph.

I used the screws that came with the kit. Drill the holes, filled with sealent, and screwed them in. Zero leak. Like I said before measure three times.

Turning is very stable. Takes a bit more wheel to get to the same turn but will sping out on the lake at 50mph. Did so today with a nice spray in my face :)

I never take my boat to a place that does not have at least two feet under the ass end (whats the nautical term there... ) Not just for the tabs but so i do not get rocks in my pump/impeller.

I made them the same disdence on each side from the center going as wide I could, while keeping the tabs in the water. Notice I am on the drain to the rightside and on the bilge drain to the top. This is the side to start on. The other side has plenty of room so you can match it up on the same distance

I can hit the throttle with the skatTrak and the boat will lift just a little on the front. plain in a few seconds and top speed is just a few seconds from there.

I love to spin my boat out, especially with first time riders on board . I'm afriad the drag created by these trim tabs could make that even more unsafe of a situation. Do the bolts have some kind of backing for extra support? Seem like those little screws would be easy to pull under a little force.

The screws hold it fine as the tab under the pressure of the water raises up even with the boat so the pressure on the screws are almost non when under speed. When going slow the pressure is mostly pushing up the tab so it is not trying to pull the screw straight out. I have jumped, spun, you name it, and mine are very strong with no problems.

At high speed the wake is the same. At slower speed theres an increased wake as the tabs are sticking in the water and causing more water to be moved.

Hope this helps

I see you live in Gilbert so you goto Canyon lake then? I'd love to see the boat in action sometime, you'll have to let me know when you are going out.

Yes, Canyon is my preferd lake. Nice lake and the closest to my door. I went to Pleasent the other day and very windy. Not sure if it was at Canyon or not though. I went up there to have my mechanic lake test with the new carbs on. I never hooked up with him so I tested it myself. (I have new jets on order.)

It will be few more weeks before I get back to playing I will email you when I go. Maybe we can hook up.

so do the trim tabs give you better control in chop? i had six people on my challenger and when the wind picked up we were getting tossed around. plus my father in law's boat sit's deeper in the water and in the chop he was able to kick my ass. if the tabs give you greater control in chop i want them.

Glenwhitt:

Just purchase the same set. Putting them in the same location as yours, I end up with a bit of preload on the starboard side (when placing the upper starboard mount under the hose fitting). Looks like it wishes it had another 1/4" to work with. Did you experience the same?

Just took it out for a test run. These made a world of difference in how the boat handles and rides. Really selttled things down nicely. Jumps on plane quick and stays nice and level.
