Ok, so I got the top end rebuild finished and while I was in there I replaced all of the old grey shit lines and also fixed my fuel baffle. Im pretty much ready to fire it up but I wanted to know of any cautions? I am curious to know how long it will take to get the new fuel moving in the lines? I can assume that just turning the motor over will start the oil pump and it will get the oil going?

Last, when I get it in the water and running what is the best way to break it in?

Any and all advise would be great

You need to make sure that u got all the air out of your oil lines going to injection pump..bleeder screw on pump.. if you did a rebuild you should run premix in the oil and oil injection at same time.. for at least on tank of fuel.. also when you start the motor let it idle and hold the injection pump wide open to get oil flowing faster.. if you had it unhooked.. should not take to long for fuel to get to carbs if everything is working properly.. also should have new plugs if you did top end rebuild..

ok so I should start it up and run it out of the water first at idle so I can hold the injection wide open to get the oil flowing? I dont have the hose hookup, I was hoping to just do this in the water. I found the bleed screw and bled the line. I will run premix for the first tank (what ratio do you recommend?). I have a couple sets of new plugs on hand.

Can I just remove the plugs and turn the motor over while holding the oil injection wide open? I wanted to test compression anyway.

u can run it out of water without hose but i would not run it for more than 20 second or so at a time... you can do it at the lake if you
prefer.. if you did the fuel lines ur lines should be empty of gas so premix your gas before you turn it over and you should get premixed gas to the motor to protect it while you hold the injection pump open.. when i did mine i ran 40:1 ratio.. your compression will get better after your rings get broke in.. i would check it after a few tanks of fuel that way you get true reading..

Great info, I just made a water hose hookup connector so I will try to do it this way. I already made some premix 50:1 just for insurance. Good news on the compression, checked it last night and each cylinder was at 165 so if it just gets better then thats good news.

165 seems high.....did you do any mods to it?

Where about in Michigan are you?

165 does sound a little high to me also... if you do it on the hose start it first then turn water on... and when you shut it down water first then engine.. you probably know that already just saying..

I did a 1mm bore with new pistons, is this maybe why I have 165?

I hooked the hose up, first primed the gas, turned over almost right away but ran a bit of a high idle for about the first 15 secs. Turned the water on after about 8 secs let it continue to idle, held the injection pump open and got all the lines full of oil, worked perfectly. throttled up a couple times, idle came down and purred nice. Let it run for about 20 more secs turned water off and ran for about another 8-10 secs and shut it off.

Seems like all is good. I will run this 5 gallons out and then maybe do a compression test?

Im in Fremont, about 45 mins NW of Grand Rapids.

ok, went out in the water, ran awesome for about 2-3 mins, then fouled the plugs, Stuck on a new set and it ran for about 5-6 mins then fouled the plugs. is this normal when breaking in a rebuild motor? About to stick in the 3rd set and see how far we can go. Any info would be great!

thanks again

i think i went thru 2 sets when i broke mine in.. the key is not to let it load up.. what i mean is dont let it idle much like thru no wake zones and such... also did you check to make sure your injection pump was properly adjusted?? make sure the lines on the pump line up together.. you can adjust with the cable..

yep, 3rd set seemed to be the charm (knock on wood) ran for about 25 mins no problem then was no wake time on the lake, will be out again tomorrow. I will probably replace with a new set in a couple days, break in seems to be rough on plugs (I remember the same for my nitro RC cars).

I will check the lines on the pump tonight and make sure they are lined up. Thanks lth8181 for the help and info!!

And count the fact that if you premixed the first tank, and your pump is working, its getting a lot of oil. Plugs are cheap, a new top end or worse and the extra time and money involved....meh.

Congrats on the rebuild!

Mike, my thoughts exactly! $4 and 2 mins vs $200-$350 and many hours, think I will take the $2. LOL....

I was also thinking the same on the oil, since Im running 50:1 and the oil pump is working then its getting allot of oil. I think next tank I will run with straight gas or maybe like 10:1.

And thanks on the rebuild, I feel like a champ. HA!
