Titles and no title required?????

I have noticed the subject of PWC titles mentioned on this forum on more than a few occasions. I am just curious though, what would, or do, you do when considering purchasing a ski from a state that does not require a PWC to be titled?

In GA, all you need is a bill of sale and the registration from the current owner. If it is not registered to the current owner you have to have a paper trail and bill of sale going back to the last registered owner.

I always get a title if you can.

PA requires them for boats after 1992... or 93... around there.

it just proves you own it, and it's like $20, so why not.

In MN, WI, and IA skis only need registration. Most people I talk to tell me if you have the actual registration card and a BOS you can get a title in a title state.

That's true, if it comes from a state that doesn't title.

Yeah that last 96xp I picked up came from GA (I'm in sc) no title and that's what scared everyone off...they didn't know GA is non title state

This is correct for GA, however if it isn't available (like my 97 GSX) you can take the boat to an inspection by the DNR, they will run the HIN through the GCIC (Georgia Crime Investigation Center) and insure the ski isn't stolen. If that comes up clean you can start a new paper trail.

It is true, except if the purchased ski does not have a hull identification number. In that case you will have to send in your registration and money, then wait for the DNR to contact you via e-mail or phone to set up a hull inspection. It is simple just go to the DNR web site and see when hull inspections are being held in your region. You just show up at the designated place at the proper time and the DNR officer will look over your ski and give you your HIN number and tell you to purchase the letters and your registration card will be in the mail within two weeks.
If you have a HIN number already on the ski, as well as, the previous registration card, expired or not, you will not require a Hull inspection. Just went through this with my 96xp resto.

Alabama is a non-title state as well. DMV here requires anyone selling a boat to report the new Owner's name and address, along with current registration number to the Alabama Marine Police Division within 15 days of sale of vessel. Seller also is required to provide the new Owner with a bill of sale and the last registration certificate for use when transferring registration. I think Tennessee is similar, as we bought our boat there and had no issues when I registered it in Alabama. Just had to have Bill of Sale and previous registration which the previous owner provided. From what I can tell looking at their website, same applies for PWC's.
