My 97 Speedster is one that will make you pull your hair out.
Have had a mystery for sometime now and I am looking for any ones help to solve.
History
I bought this boat in February. It was a mess but that is no big deal to me. I am very good at making things look good. I paint cars and have even built show cars. So I figured I can redo this boat over. During the off season this is what I did. I have posted pics in the past of the new look of this boat.
During the off season I did not mess with the engines. I was told they were good by previous owner. This boat was bought by them from a mechanic who worked on this boat since new. Mechanic stated engines were good but carbs needed rebuild and boat would be fine.
I did rebuild the carbs.
One engine we could not get started for nothing. It would turn but never catch. Later mechanic told me I needed to replace the engine. I never complained to original owner or previous mechanic. We did have a rough winter and mechanics were loaded with work from boats being destroyed. Even those that were winterized.
I had the engine replaced. Ran good out of the water. Finally I thought I could enjoy the boat. Took it to the water and the engine just replaced would not rev over 3500 rpm.
I came here and was given the advice to change the rectifier. I did do so and the engine would then rev over 3500rpm. OK Finally we can have fun.
On the water once again problems with the changed engine.
Other then test runs I have not had the ability to enjoy this boat at all.
I had it out a week ago and the original engine works fine. It does what it is suppose to and I have no issues. The engine that was changed still acts funny.
Going to full throttle it would only rev up between 2000 and 3000rpm. Ever once in a while it would all of a sudden shoot up to 7000 to 8000rpm and the boat would take off like a rocket. This would last for 2 seconds and then engine would cut off.
I thought once again maybe this new rectifier was not good. I bought another one. Put it in today and took the boat to the water. Still the same. At this point I think I can eliminate the rectifier.
I played with this boat for a while today to fully see what is going on.
Here is the full details
First this engine smokes a lot. The engine that acts right barely smokes at all but the engine acting up smokes a lot.
When I use both engines together the one engine as stated only revs to 2000 to 3000rpm. It has its occasional bursts to 7000 and 8000rpm and boat shoots off.
If I use good engine on its own I can get the boat to 30 or 35 mph.
If I use the bad side on its own then the rpm's act as they should based on throttle position. It will go past the 3000 mark as it should and stay at 7000 or 8000 rpm at full throttle. The engine will not cut off etc.. However the boat will not move with this engine on its own.
So when the two engines work together the one engine will not properly rev in rpm's. It has its sudden burst for 2 seconds then shuts off. On its own it will rev as it should but the boat will not move.
When both engines are working together I cannot get bad side to go above 3000rpm and the boat will top off at about 30 to 35mph. When it has its sudden burst in rpm's the boat speed will jump quickly to about 45mph then the engine cuts off.
If anyone can please help it would be much appreciated. I would finally like to see what this boat can do. Plus if this continues I will be bald soon. I quit enjoy my hair.
