The Carbon Ring thing...

So, I chipped the carbon ring in the 98 GTX when pulling the pump, and have the new one in now.
This baffled me a bit, and I'd love to have someone explain it.
The Floating ring, spins against the carbon ring, with no lubricant? Or, is water the lube?
Sorry, I understood the seal carrier setup, but this looks too simple to work.
The two inner rubber seals inside the floating ring are the seals that keep water out of the hull?
How much water gets past the carbon ring/floating ring contact point?
Does a new carbon ring need to "seat" with the floating ring with a few hours of wear-in use?
Does that contact point make any discernable noise? Like a hiss?
Sorry for all the noob questions.

The negative pressure inside the hull caused while the ring is turning in the presence of water causes a temporary barrier that creates a waterproof seal........LOL JK. The 2 o rings inside the metal "top hat" seal water from entering the hull. The carbon ring and top hat are cooled and lubed by the water. This is why you cant run your ski out of water for too long.

Carbon seals like this are used on a lot of water pumps. My swimming pool pump and hot tub pump employ the same concept. Pretty cool solution, really.
