Testing stator

Ok I am at my wits end...can someone walk me through on the procedure to bench testing the stator before I install the motor? I’ve tried and tried by going by the manual and I just can’t seem to check the resistance..

Since I don't know what engine you are playing with... all I can say it's pretty straight forward. Take the wires, and connect to an ohm meter. They will show some resistance. If they are open, or shorted... it's bad.

Since it seems like you have the manual... it should tell you the resistance between the wires.

Sorry I must have omitted that from the original post. The engines are 657X. I have tried to go by the manual I just get really confused. All I have to do is just touch two wires with the two probes that’s it?

Besides I’m kind of leery to go with the manual because when I went to that with the springs it steered me wrong

Is the manual a factory manual, or an aftermarket? The aftermarkets aren't always right. But yes... just touch the probes of the meter and get a reading.

So if I get anything besides 0, it has a short? The speedster manual I believe is a factory manual

Another question is can I use a stater from a 720 on a 657X motor

No... they were a little different.

As far as the reading... there should be some resistance. If it's a 0... then it's shorted out. If it's infinite... the it's open.

OK so let me get this straight, it doesn’t matter what to lawyers I touch I just touch two wires and as long as I don’t get a zero rating I’m good?

If you suspect one get one from Westside Powersports.

Your biggest issue is going to be timing as the 650X doesn't have timing marks and has to be set with a timing light per the manual.

The old ones that I took off had a mark on the crank case that you just lined up with the mark on the stater it’s self and that’s all that you do right

OK here’s what I found out so far, I put my multimeter to ohms, When I touch the probes from the multimeter to both black wires on the stater I get a reading of 0.06 whenever I move a probe to a Nother wire it reads I’m assuming infinite with one. When I switch the probes to either one of the black wires I get the same reading 0.06 but whenever I try any of the other ones I get one again

OK... heres the info requested... the Black/red and the Black are your ignition. The yellow and yellow/green(or black) are your charging coils.

Meter on the blacks should read 40 to 76 ohms.

Meter on the yellows should read 0.05 to 0.6 ohms.

OK here’s another area that I’m getting confused at. In the manual it says to test the black with black and red wires in the ohms should be between 40 and 76. Now when I test the stay tours for both motors I get roughly around 60 homes between these two wires, the red and red and black. I have people tell me that I should be able to test through these other wires but whenever I try to test on them I get An overload. Is there a way to test the yellow wires coming from the stator?

OK, the ignition is checking out good, the charging coils are checking out at 0.09, is that acceptable?
