sunk float or bad solder??

Well poo, I replaced my grey fuel lines two weeks ago and while I was at it I did the fuse fix in my fuel baffle pickup. The fuel gauge has been working fine ever since except I noticed it started reading a little low a little fast. It also seemed to come off of full a lot faster than it used to but I figured it might be because I put the float back in upside. It didn't look like it mattered which way it should go in. There were equal distances to the mags from either end. Went for a good ride yesterday and it was working the entire time. I went out to the dock this afternoon after work to gas it back up and it is all the way down below empty. I checked the ohms and it is reading nothing. So either my float has sunk or by fuse bridge didn't hold. I checked the soldered bridge before reinstalling by pushing pretty hard on it with my finger and it held. I also noticed that there was something swishing around (little) in the float, but I could not find a leak so I tested, it worked and I reinstalled.

It seems to me that if the float sunk, I would still get something on the gauge, but it is below empty and doesn't even budge when I press the start button. I get no resistance on the ohms meter.

So what are your thoughts, has my float sunk or did my solder not hold?

Electricity is such a pain. You could always take it out and stick it in a clear container of gas and see what it is doing? If your solder joint is holding then it may be somewhere else.

If I find out it that the float is sinking, I am sure I can fix the leak if I can find it. Any ideas on how to find the leak? When I had it out before, like I said, It had a little something swishing around inside of it, but I could not find or make it leak out anywhere.

Well the mystery thickens. I went out this afternoon to take my youngest daughter for a ride and to let her ride me around on it some and the fuel gauge of course still was not working. We got up the river and I started cutting circles and going back and forth over the waves and all of sudden the gauge starts working again. Reading all the way up between 3/4 and full. Any thoughts on what this could be??
