Sudden loud Noise from engine

I was out on the water today crusing around when all of a sudden the boat started making a strange noise.
The engine became very loud with a lot of vibration. I immediatly shut the engine off and jumped in to check if anything was sucked up through the impeller. Nothing there. I started the engine nd turned for the dock.

I slowly made my way back, too much vibration and noise if I went over 3000rpm. Even at idle it was loud.
No codes or lights showing on gauges. All systems O.K.

With the boat home I checked the impeller and wear ring. There was more wear on the ring (I check the ring after every trip) no damage to the impeller. The ring was worn a little unevenly towards the top.

So not being sure about the wear ring, I decided to take the hose off the supercharger. There was a little bit of play on the turbine but I couldnt turn it with my fingers. Is this normal?

I`m not sure what happens if a supercharger suddenly fails. Is there anyone familiar with this? I guess I should check the slipping moment.

Could this just be a bad wear ring or slightly bent drive shaft? I havent checked the clearence but its at or just over the limit.

Maybe there could be another issue I'm over looking.

Just so you know I have a 2010 180 challenger 255 hp with 46 hrs. i have owned the boat since 10 hrs. All fluid levels are O.K. Boat worked excellent up until now.

My guess woyuld be you have something (hard piece of knotty wood) stuck between the impeller and wear ring beyond where you can see it. Happened to me several times...

Hopefully you are righ. I will take the jet pump off this evening to check for obstructions and clearances.

Yeah, no need to worry it's not the SC. I have the 200 and there is a little play in the wheel. I've since update the washers and hope I'm clear until I get to the rebuild time frame.

I agree there is something in the pump. Just this weekend I had a similar issue. Boat running fine having a blast. Roll into the no wake to put it on the trailer I notice a vibration and it feels like it suckin air at about 3000 RPM. Spin back around and try to blow it out and it gets worse. Cut my losses and head in. Get home crawl under there and literally a 1/2" by 1/2" piece of a plastic bottle is wedged . Fished it outta there and purred like a kitten on Sunday. Although I wouldn't trade it for I/O just have to get used to how sensitive they are.

Glad to hear the freeplay is normal. I will check the slipping moment as soon as I get a chance.

It turns out that the jet pump bearing has been chewed up. No grease in the pump cone. I took the jet pump housing off and you could hear the bearings inside. What a mess. There is a little play in the impellar which wore into the wear ring.

I just hope this can be covered under warranty. Under the B.E.S.T warranty jet pumps are listed.
