Ok so first off I am boat dumb.. And esp jet boats.. So I traded around and ended up with a 98 1800 sportster with twin 717 . Kinda worried bout taking it out on water by myself just cuz I don't know the boat . And I have no friends that has boats that can go with me lol. But my question is.... How can I tell is it has had oil block off plates installed ? Guy I bought it off of said it did.... But I would like to confirm that.....better safe than sorry
 
Welcome to the best SeaDoo site.

Find someone to familiarize you with boating, this is vital.

Get a shop/maintenance manual. This will show you where the oil injection pump is located.

Search around this site; a lot of threads relating to the subject of "premix" which is what you need to do if the oil injection system is removed.

Lol nobody around here where I live knows anything bout these boats . Closest place is bout 1-1/2 hours away . Local boat dealer would not even talk to me bout them lol. Yea ima look around for free shop manual somewhere. Was hoping someone could tell me bout where to look to see if block plate was installed
 
Where were you planning on splashing the boat for water test? Gotta be other people around and generally boating people are very helpful.

below is typical 717/720 engine carb side tipped on side
A - oil injection pump would be replaced by blockoff plate
B - 1 input and 2 output into/from oil pump - would be blocked off
C - oil supply line to RV (rotary valve) gears - should be connected to oil tank and have oil in the line

Your Sportster engine's originally were equipped with these pumps, this pic was created by another forum member as an aid to servicing the pump lines and adjusting the output flow. Where you see the stainless cap screws in this photo, the pump and lines will have been removed and a block off plate fastened over the hole. This is located directly under the carbs/rotary intake on your motors.

Also check that the oil tank is still installed and not removed. There should be 2 oil lines going to the tank. 1 line will go to the nipple that says "1/2" line to tank" in the above pic, the other line will go to the nipple in this pic on the exhaust side of the engine. This is necessary to keep your rotary valve gear lubed while running premix.

BTW the only stupid questions on this forum are the ones that are not asked.

 
Ok awsome! Thanks guys. I just had put carb back on there when phone notified me bout the replys. So after feeling under carb. I can verify they r block off plates installed and the big hose is capped off ! So just knowing one way or the other gave me a peace of mind . Although I did find something odd .... underneath bth air filters they r a rod laying in .... I will take a pic and see of I can post it thru phone ! The pics where very helpful!!! :beer:

The metal bar was the screw plate underneath the metal filter ... Lol I took the bolts on the side out first hahahaha and when I pulled the filter out it was just laying in there as if someone put it there
 
Please do not take this as challenging your intelligence, but just a couple things that have burned lots of folks no matter experience level:

1 - before launch, insure drain plugs are in

2 - immediately after launch and before starting engine, stick nose in bilge to sniff for gas and check for leaks

I will accept advice from anyone that has more knowledge than me lol. And I can flip all my switches on and cam hear blower turn on . Bit cnt hear bilage pump

Another important item to note on dual motors; if one motor dies, do not drive over 10MPH without pinching off the dead motors water line. It should be in your owners manual.
 
Miller take a few minutes to download the owners manual for your boat free from BRP and read it cover to cover, it's pretty much required reading for first time jet boat owners. Some things unique to them like towing requirements, how to flush the motor with a pressurized hose etc. you don't want to get wrong and end up with a hurt motor and subsequently your wallet.

Ok got the owners manual saved on computer now. Thanks. And waterluvr I notice my boat looks kinda like yours in the rear.. And the engine cover part.. Is it safe to walk on that part ?

It holds me, and I'm not little by any means but I do try and stay to the outside edges a little where it's thicker. Also on mine there's a center storage door with a compartment behind it so obviously that portion of the engine cover isn't as strong.
 
Ok sweet. I was wondering. Bout that part mine has the Matt stuff on it but didn't know if it was made for walking on or not.

You definitely do not want to step or kneel on the door, those little plastic hinges aren't made to bear much weight and the latch is pretty pricey for no more than what it is.
 
Thanks guys been very helpfull . Ok so one more question while it's on my mind. When I'm starting it up on Waterhouse (one engine at a time) r they made not to idle up past idle speeds ? Or what ? Or is it something is wrong ?
 
I don't think mine has a door but thanks for lettting me know that ! And and !! I didn't even know under all the seats in the front they all have storage compartments !! How freaking cool is that !!!! :thumbsup:
 
The idle speed setting while the hull is in the water and there is a constant load on the crank from the pump is 1500 rpms, when sitting on the trailer you can expect the rpm's to be 2800-3000 out of the water without any load.

Remember, always start the motor first then the water from the hose can be turned on. When you're finished up turn the water off first and then you can stop the motor. I use a valve right on the end of the hose so it's able to be turned on and off without leaving the area of the boat.

Do yourself a favor and fill all that storage space with fishing gear and tools etc. before the wife finds it, there's no reclaiming it when a woman stakes a claim on the boat locker :)

On Edit: Your rpm's are limited by a neutral safety switch, you won't get any more than 3500 rpm's while in neutral you have to shift forward to rev the engine. Be careful doing that, should you ever experience a runaway condition revving to WOT and it won't come back down with the throttles remove your lanyard and pull and hold the choke open until the motor stalls.
