Still Bogging

Well I completely rebuilt the carbs. The surging is pretty much gone but it still bogs down at full throttle. If I gun it from an idle it bogs down and takes a while to get on plane and then runs at 3/4 speed. If I only give it about 3/4 throttle it jumps right on plane and then will bog if given full throttle.

Any ideas what this could be?

List of things done:

New Gas
New Plugs
New Fuel Filter
New Fuel Lines
Carbs Rebuilt (all gaskets, diaphragms & internal filters)

It sounds like you didn't get all the crap out of the passages in the carbs. Did you clean them yourself?...did you use carb cleaner to blow out the passages? Carb adjustments...Lows Speed 1 1/2 High Speed adjustment is "0".

Yup I cleaned out the carbs the best I could. Maybe I will have to take them apart and blow them out again.

The Fuel Selector value was brand new the last season I ran the ski. Does the same thing on "Res" and "On"

t will jump right on plane if I give it 3/4 throttle but if I gun it from idle it will bog down and only run at about 3/4 speed.

If I pin the throttle from 3/4 position, it will not go any faster and bogs down by about 5mph or so

Are the adjustments for the 95 XP 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 for the Low Speed? I haven't touched the adjustments at all but maybe I will check and see.

By saying you didn't change the adjustments, do you mean you did not remove the LSA and HSA adjustment needles?? If not, How did you clean your HS and LS jets??? That could be where your problem is. If you meant you took them out, but then put them back the same setting as they were, then maybe not.

Are your RAVEs working properly? Check them out.

This is the 717 engnie so there aren't any RAVE Valves. I didn't remove the High or Low Speed jets. I just blew them out with compressed air and some carb cleaner. Maybe I should completely remove them, clean them out and put them back in.

Oops, no RAVEs, not worries there. ;)

Yeah, I would take 'em out and flush with carb cleaner. You will also want to inspect the o-rings since you left them in when using the carb cleaner before. Carb cleaner is pretty hard on rubber. Dissolved the finger tips of my rubber gloves while flushing carbs.

When removing the high and low speed jets, do they just screw all the way back in or is there a specific setting for them? I know on my Mikuni carbs on my bike, they are set to specific turns.

To check before removing them, turn clockwise and count the number of turns to bottom (gently bottom out). Write them down.

You can check the manual for the factory setting.
The 97 XP shop manual shows...

HSA = 0 turns from bottom
LSA = 1

However, most of the advice from here is 1-3/4 for the LSA.

Moto-Madness please let me know how that works for you. I have a 1998 Sportster with similar problems. I have sprayed the carbs out with cleaner without taking them apart. Also I have swaped the fuel pumps which made no difference. Another post said to cut the red wire coming off of the rectifier...I did that today and it didn't make a difference. I am completly lost now. Any help is appreciated.

you need to take the carb/s out and "disassemble" them, to "clean" it. Those jets/passages are size of c**t-hairs, doesnt take much to clog it..

that doesn't sound like a fun job but if its the problem I will give it a shot. Is there anything I should keep in mind while cleaning them...I don't have much experience working with carbs. Should I buy a rebuild kit or just clean it out and put it back together?

Those are the settings for the High and Low speed adjustments on the outside of the carbs. Do the Jets inside the carbs need to be adjusted? Certain Mikuni carbs need the jets adjusted to.

The carb rebuild was actually pretty easy. Just remember how it all goes back together haha. I got the carb kits from SBT and they came with everything except the intake gaskets.

I didn't touch the jets or the adjustments so that maybe my problem so its time to take the carbs back off and competely disassemble them now haha

The jets themselves just screw all the way in.The adjusters are where you have specific settings.Use the springs that you already had,not the ones from the kit.

Well looks like my rear motor mounts are completely shot to. The fronts are solid but you can lift the rear of the engine off the mounts haha sweet time to change them to.
