I did it to myself, but I still need to fix it. As part of reviving this old 93 GTs, I replaced the wear ring. It was really tight when I put the prop back in. I thought I'd use the starter to shave a little off but I apparently burnt the starter up doing so. I think it is probably an aftermarket one because it's black and all of the pictures of OEM ones Iv'e seen are white. I've read all the posts poo-pooing buying an aftermarket one, but I can't locate an OEM one for something that old...seems like new OEM parts start with 1996. Suggestions?

I just pulled the starter and I was wrong...it is an OEM. Ummm, maybe this is the problem:

I think I'll try the kit for $25 before anything else.

Ok, so the rebuild kit finally arrived. Bought it off ebay from Caltric on 07/25 because they said it would arrive by 07/29. It shipped 07/30, arrived 08/04...<sigh>.

Anyway, while I had it apart I disassembled a little more than necessary to replace the brushes just to clean it out and make sure everything looked ok. Got it back together and decided to test it before re-installing. I didn't have a battery handy so I hooked it up to my battery charger that has a 225amp "boost" setting. The starter spins, but apparently not fast enough to push the bendix up the shaft. I can't decide if something else is wrong with it or if I just didn't have enough juice to spin it fast enough.

It should work on a Battery Charger like that. I have tested some like that and never seen that issue.
Are you sure you have it together correctly ???

Think so...not that many parts to it. I did spot this

and this

when I took it back apart though. I guess I need to hunt down another used one. <sigh>

The good news is my eBay starter arrived early today in time to install for the weekend. The bad news is, it has an extra mounting lug:

It looks like it'll still work since the extra lug looks like it'll be pointing towards an empty space. Fingers crossed.

The one on the left is for a 580 or 657 Engine

The one on the right is for a 787 engine

I can't remember which one the 717 engine uses.

Never tried switching them though. Somebody else one here will know.

The bendix does not come out with speed.

It comes out with momentum and then retracts once the momentum is gone.

So if you just hook up your charger to the positive and then touch the starter with the other, IT will jump around but it will also drive the bendix all the way out and make it stay there until the starter reaches a high enough RPM.

Having load on the bendix will make it stay out.

One thing you could do is try and chew up a 2x4 with the starter gear. You will notice that it has lots of power to chew up the wood but the bendix will also stay out the entire time your chewing.

Pull it away and the bendix will retract.

There is a Seadoo engineer somewhere who needs his ass kicked. Just about lost my mind trying to figure out why I couldn't get a starter bolt started...seemed like the holes didn't line up at all. Finally dawned on me to poke my phone down in their and get a pic of what I'm dealing with. Low and behold, two sets of tapped holes:

The starter on the right is just like mine out of a 717. The mounting hole is for your negative ground cable.
