in progress!!
reading up on the site i have no clue on the history of my ski besides i bought it from the original owner. the ski runs great however only goes 25mph any day all day which doesn't seem right at all seeing i have heard others doing nearly 40 and my compression s great.
ski: 02 sea doo gti le with rotax 716 motor

*how do i know if i need a wear ring? mine looks good but there are grooves on the outside, the prop looks good only a few small nicks here and there on the intake side.

*i read there should be almost no play between the wear ring and impeller but mine has about 2mm all the way around, could this be causing the slow speed?

*also in another post i mentioned about water coming in my seal in the engine compartment so common census is the carbon ring...i still have not gotten that far as of yet seeing i only have a short time each day to work on my ski.

You should get about 50mph maybe a little more. I'm not sure how much 2mm is but you should have no more than .040" between the wear ring and the impeller.

Here's what I would do, go ahead and replace the wear ring, the impeller is a little nicked up so go over the impeller with a dremel tool or file. Replace the carbon seal (I suspect this is the major problem), and rebuild the drive shaft. On second look it looks like most of the wear ring is gone, all I see is the fiberglass core. So definitely replace the wear ring.

When you refill the jet pump use GL5 75-90W Synthetic oil, I use Mobile 1, and use a new O ring.

you shredded your wear ring, it has delaminated and the black outer part is completely gone. I'm surprised you can get on plane with that.

i just bought it, i used it about 4 times and it runs the same today as it did the 1st. it physically runs great but i knew something was wrong seeing it wouldn't go over 25mph. it does get on plane but not to quickly. i was also wondering why all the ones i see are black or white and mine looked like fiberglass...guess that's because it is:mad: any reason what would cause this?

Wear rings just wear out, that's why they're called wear rings, for it to come apart the way yours did its been worn out for some time. This is probably the first time its been replaced since the ski was new. It's not that big a deal, you've already done almost half the work.

You won't believe how much better your ski will run once its replaced.

awsome i hope so, now im having a heck of a time taking the drive shaft out. it comes 3/4 out of the engine and thats it. seems to be cought up where the rubber boot is...i have tomorrow off work so im going to call around for part prices.
1.wear ring
2. seal gasket
3. carbon kit
4. thread sealer (auto parts store)

It would help a lot if you had a service manual, you can download one for free if you become a premium member of this forum. I'm not going to lie you can probably find the manual for download if you do a google search.

theres a metal c-clip, under the steel collar, that the carbon ring rides against. Have someone hold the driveshaft, while you push the steel collar towards the back of the ski to expose the clip.

Do a compression test on the cylinders, since you have ran it 4-times, with a wear ring in that condition. By doing such, you managed to not supply the engine with the water that is needed.

Just ordered the parts for my wifes 99 GS. Im replacing the bearings while its apart. With a wear ring in that bad a shape I would imagine no one ever changed the pump oil, might be a good idea for you.

I also bought a neoprene gasket and impeller removal tool from another site. Grand total of about 300 bucks with shipping, taxes, tags, document fees, etc.

the steel colar wont budge! i can just see the "C" clip but ive been hitting it with a hammer and stil nothing :(...i did however get the old wear ring out and ep..far thinner that the new one.

also got the old wear ring out and new in. it spun fine but once i put the nose and filled it with mobil 1 synt gear its stiff to spin???????

stiff to spin is ok if it's rubbing on the new wear ring, spray some wd40 on the new wear ring and start it, it may cut a small groove in the new wear ring but that's fine.

to push the collar back to expose the c-clip, it helps to have the pump attached. just grab the collar with both hands and twist, wiggle, push, you don't need a hammer.

mine would not budge no matter what...ended up using a dremmel and cutting it off, then a wire wheel to smooth out the rusty spots...everything is back together and i hit the start button and it turned over everything looks to be norm...tomorow is the test!

well what the heck..last time i took it out it died on me, i was low on fuel so figured that was the reason. after getting it all together and fueled up today it still wouldn't start, i sprayed quick start and nothing, turns over fine. pulled the new plugs and have NO spark! put the old ones back in ans also no spark....odd thing is i did get spark in 1 cylinder shortly but it was about 1 sec and then stopped.....could this be a bad coil?
