Will this Spark Tester work on my 1999 720 GTI? Works on my 2000 GTX 787 RFI.

These are the ones I used. I was looking for the picture and I found 3 for $12 so I bought a few more. LOL They work great and you can even see a strong or weak spark. Easy Peasy. Remove you Plug wire and plug this inline. The engine runs like normal with it plugged in. They are great !!

I'm get no spark at all. I have checked the coil and the wiring. Everything specs out fine. I am suppose to get a pulse signal at the white wire. Nothing. I'm suspecting something is wrong in the coil circuit in the MPEM. A few months ago I tried a new MPEM. It didn't work either. Sometimes new doesn't mean it works.

What is good about these spark checkers is that you can watch for the spark. I suggest installing and removing the key a few times and watching what happens when you hit the start button. For some reason the skis recognize the key but don't always fire the coil. I've had that happen more than once. If the mpem does not see the signal from the Mag pick up it will not fire the ignition. It has to see the rotation of the crank to know when to fire. I had a pinched wire on my GTX, it was smashed under the rectifier. That ski was moody and sometimes not fire at all then all of a sudden it would start working. :) Took me a while to find it and that was by accident. I guess if you look in enough places you'll get it eventually. The old saying for me... "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then." LOL Stay with it and Good Luck !!

Check the plug where it comes out of the mag housing. I've seen wires burnt right at the plug. Pull the mag cover if you need to and have a look inside. I've seen some pretty funk internals. Don't go throwin parts at these skis, they'll take the money and laugh at you.

I have replaced the stator twice. Nothing wrong with the inside. Connector plugs are fine and make connection.

You've probably cleaned all the grounds but that is always a good thing to do. The manual has some checks you can do on the MPEM but I find those checks can be misleading. I had the same readings on two MPEMs and one worked, the other didn't. I had an issue on a 1996 GTI where it gave me trouble starting, then after starting it would not shut off. Ended up being one of the larger flat terminals on the MPEM that needed cleaning. I'd check the wires at the MPEM plugs.

I also had trouble with my GTX and when I began pullling the connectors apart I found dirt in one. Just gotta stick with it. They get weird. Good Luck !!

I was wondering the same also about the larger flat terminals on the MPEM connector plugs. I would be more comfortable with replacing the flat spade terminals at the wiring harness connector. Are they hard to remove?

I've been able to clean those up to my satisfaction without opening them up and making the loose in the process. Basically if they are "not" corroded you should be ok. You can follow that connector to the next junction to determine you have good contact. There is a certain size drill bit you can run through the smaller terminals that won't open them up. Pick a smaller size. You're only cleaning. I have my doubts about all the dielectric grease everywhere. I don't trust that stuff.

I'm workin on a RFI today. Typical.... everything looks good but it won't run. LOL It ran a few days ago, now.... nope. Getting fire, gettin fuel. I'll put the Candoo on it but it's always a Can "don't" for me regarding the RFIs. LOL
