hey yall

by the title......A chum of mine talked to a mechanic about my seadoo boat i bought couple weeks back its a 98 speedster with 787's in her.The mechanic said first they discontinued that model for a reason;anyone want to elaborate on that one besides fuel economy seems to me emissions was a probably a modivater for that one,he also said that after 15 years they stop making parts for the machine but as i see on this forum parts r readily available and barring a catastrophe they should continue right.....so any thought or conclusions would help thx btw still cold as a mofo here not seadoo weather yet

They only made that "style" boat for 98 an 99 with the twin 787's, in 2K they switched to the Merc 240 engine from 2K to '02. So in all that body style ran from 98 to 02. I'm sure the EPA had something to do with it. Parts--I wouldn't worry about it most of it comes from the PWC's. The expensive stuff is the MPEM that is the brain of the boat, they are out there second hand and probably a few NOS ones kicking around. It never enters my mind that the boat is no longer made, there is always the aftermarket for parts. I have no intentions on getting rid of mine anytime soon, and like Sabr said "We can fix anything"

Yep, the guys are right, most of us have ski's or boats at least as old as yours, in fact SeaDoo hasn't made 2-strokes for several years. So yes 2-strokes are obsolete, but who cares?

Sounds to me like that "mechanic" doesn't want to work on the boat or is laying the foundation for some high repair bills. They made the speedster for many years- until 2012 I think. The 787 is regarded as one of the best two stroke jet ski engines ever made.

As far as fuel economy.....well it's a twin engine high performance jet boat.......HA!

My first sea doo boat was the 98 speedster. I have said numerous times i think out of all the smaller boats it is by far the best setup. It can easily hold 4 adults and has tons of power. I only got rid of it to upgrade to bigger, but i miss it really. Like everyone said, parts can be found. Most of the non engine components are made by other boat part suppliers and you can still get them. Engine parts are everywhere. There are quite a few guys here who know those boats very well. You have nothing to worry about.

That was my first jet boat I bought last year. I upgraded this year to newer and larger. I was frustrated by the lack of reliability but I'd echo the comments here that parts aren't an issue and guys on here can help u with anything. Be prepared to learn more than u expected as these (like all boats) require some wrench time. I loved this boat and I didn't sell it. I still have it and will likely rock it around from time to time. My suggestion is get a shop manual first things first you will need it one way or the other. Also I found mechanics very unwilling to work on this boat. One guy told me he hates it and I'd have to wait until he was done with all the 4 strokes before he'd consider my 2 strokes. So if u want to stay on the water (as I did) get ready to pick up a wrench.
