I just bought a 96 Speedster last year, I have had good service out of the boat but it smokes real bad. Still using the oil that was in the tank from the previouse owner. He claims to have bought a low ash oil from walmart that met the requirements from the manufacture. Is there a adjustment for the oil injection system? How can I check to see if the mixture is correct? I realize that some smoke is normal from a two stroke engine but... this thing looks like its on fire while idling at the dock! Also, I saw a boat just like mine last weekend and his wasn't smoking at all! Any help is much appreciated.

Is it running on Premix?

Welcome to Seadooforum.
There is a Thin wire or cable that goes from the throttle linkage to the oil
Pump that controls how much oil is injected into the motor.
Sounds like it has ether fallen off or has broken. If it has fallen off simply
Put it back on... If its Broken there is an alinement procedure that must be used. Do You have a sea-doo shop manual? If not You can sign up for premium membership here at seadoo forum and download the manual.
Also You may want to Post your questions on the seadoo boat forum.
Good luck and let us know what You find.

I'm willing to bet the smoke is just a result of the previous owner running a cheap (read cheapest) oil rather than buying something better that has been formulated to smoke less.

Welcome to the seadoo forum goneout. You might want to do a compression test just to see whats going on inside. If you want info on doing a compression test properly let me know.

96 Speedster? Eh?

Well, that would be a 2 stroke motor. And so smoke means either OIL or WATER. If it is water, then it is steam, which would be normal, if somebody got water in the exhaust system. Oil? Could be a bunch of oil in the bottom of the motor.

I say, run it for an hour, and then tell us what is going on. I mean, ride it. If it clears up, then you just may be ok. Get her heated up, and the system cleaned up. Another source of "smoke" or steam, could be lots of ETHANOL in your gas, has sucked up water out of the air, and now, she has a bit of water to run out.

I am having issues with a 24 HP industrial Honda motor on a sawmill, right now, due to this very issue. I will have to DUMP out all the old fuel, and fill the tank with FRESH fuel, to the full.
I was following a NEW car the other day, and it was DUMPING water out of one side of the dual (probably fake dual) exhaust, when the driver went up hills, and pressed the accelerator a bit. All I am saying is that it would not hurt to look at the bigger pic of this issue. It may not cost you money in repairs, but you may need FRESH gas.

Also, if this motor has the rotary gear on the bottom, end, then it could be a bad rotary gear seal. To check this, remove the spark plugs, ground the spark plug wire, and crank it over, and see if it spits a wad of oil out of the spark plug hole.
As always, if you need to use jumper cables, do not have the HOST engine running, although this is standard for cars, and normal equipment. You can mess up the electrical system if the HOST in a jumper situation is RUNNING.

Also, Mr. Plough5757, that pic is just a bit lewd. My kids came in, and I was ashamed to have that on my screen. Do you mind changing it?

Thanks!

Nate

RE Smokey Boat

Thank you for the ideas. Gonna check the cable adjustment first... then try the seadoo oil... if she still smokes I think I might try the premix idea. Hope its not the seals on the crank! Let you know what happens.
