Since our lake is empty, I decided to buy a metal detector...

Congratulations scooper77515, without even knowing it you have obeyed one of the promices in 'The Treasure Hunter's Code of Ethics' that states "I WILL remove and properly dispose of any trash I find" from; Where to Find Treasure, by Dick Stout

It just seemed like the right thing to do. It doesn't feel right to dig up potentially hazardous items from the lake bottom, and leave them up on top of the sand where it will find unsuspecting feet when the water comes back up.

I have found around my dock:

A really nice minow trap worth around 30 bucks...I looked into getting one.
A SS deep fish hook remover pliers..excellent shape
a brass intake valve for sprinkler system...which I needed
1.5 in PVC pipe... around 10 feet..I ended up cleaning it up and using it to extend out my intake pipe for the sprinker system
A slab spoon I lost last year

Now I just need to reclaim that 100 lbs of lead sinkers I lost trying to catch fish...I could break even.

When the wind kicks up the waves uncover more stuff!!

Mike

Cool stuff! I just hope to find ANYTHING so I can tell others "I found something" while on our trip.

Currently, we beat the blizzard to Santa Fe, NM, so we wouldn't be stranded 3 days in Amarillo, TX :ack:

Got to Santa Fe, blizzard hit, and all the roads behind us were immediately shut down

We have had a great couple of days living at 7200', getting short winded just wiping our noses!

We wont do any nugget hunting until we get to Arizona, where the gold is more prevalent. That would be tomorrow...

Scoop, here is something to think about. What did you find in NM?

Diver finds class ring, tracks down owner's family

LONGWOOD, Fla. — Louise Hearst Entzminger lost her class ring in a central Florida swimming hole in the 1930s.

Scuba diver Reed Banjanin found the Mississippi Women's College ring last summer and was determined to find its owner.

The Orlando Sentinel ( http://thesent.nl/y8t8Rn) reports 38-year-old Banjanin used the Internet to track information about Entzminger. He learned she died in 1975, but was able to find her grandson John Entzminger in Oakton, Va.

John Entzminger turned 75 the day Banjanin called about his grandmother's ring. It arrived via mail on Christmas Eve.

The retired engineer suspects his grandmother lost the ring while visiting relatives in Seminole County in the 1930s. He plans to pass it along to his grandchildren as a family heirloom.

I heard about that on the radio!

I found two nuggets of what I think is lead, maybe bismuth. Some modern coins, and a bunch of bullets.

Brought home some nice rocks for our landscaping.

didn't have a metal detector but walking the beach today I found a prescription bottle that had washed up on shore. could see something metal inside so opened it up and there was a 3/16" socket inside

Now if I could just find that 10mm in the bottom of my hull...

Serious? a socket inside a bottle? Sounds like the beginning of a GREAT fishing lure!

Rat-L-Trap my arse!!!

yep serious. strange thing is I have a couple old prescription bottles in my tool box that I put small parts in so I don't lose them.

Well, the lake is back up to full levels, so no luck on the beaches (they are knee deep under water right now).

Found a couple bucks worth of coins on the beach at Surfside, and in some playgrounds.

Got a couple more kids at work interested in trying it out.

Other than that, going back to Arizona in a couple weeks to try again.

Scooper, i need a bit of local knowledge on lake houston. where's the best place to put in at? i'm wanting to try to get this xp on the water tomorrow or saturday to run it around a bit, check for leaks and such. is there a city ramp that's cheap/free?

You are hanging around kiddies playgrounds??????:o

that's how I met my wife. didn't know we was cuzins til afterward. turns out we had been to the family reunions together but she was at the kids table so I never saw her...

I was at Harbor Freight today and decided to buy this metal detector for $45
http://www.harborfreight.com/9-function-metal-detector-67378.html

I walled around the back yard for about 30 minutes and found all kinds of stuff. First was the end off an old hose, a screw, a nail, 2 stakes for a golf net I had 10 years ago, a chunk of a lawn mower blade that shattered when I hit a rock a couple years ago, then it got a bit more interesting. Two more things that I don't have a clue what they are. One kind of resembles the head end of an antique key but the shaft is bent not straight. The other thing is something made of lead, kind of shaped llike a bullet. perfectly flat on the bottom and mushroomed on the top, a couple small grooves going around the side. I'll post a pic to see if anyone has a clue what these things are.

Kind of looking forward to taking it to the beach at our lake to see if I can find some jewelry and to the atlantic beach to find some washed up treasure from all those sunken ships carrying millions in gold coins :)

Congrats on your new toy!

I am heading back to the Arizona desert in a couple weeks to hit some old mines and stuff...

good luck. i forgot the funny part. I had another hit on something, I kept waving it back and forth in front of me before I realized (brain fart) it was my shovel.....

Shovel, metal eyes on your shoes/boots. The metal bolts that hold the toys together at the playground.

Be careful around any cement, the rebar sets it off from a good distance away.

I have learned when to ignore the beeps, for the most part.

Ok,, that is funny...
I'm sure you are not the first though...

Found this stuff in Arizona yesterday...

Found a flourite crystal today and an abandoned mine that was WAY too deep for me to get in to.
