Sorry I'm new to this forum and had posted this in the wrong forum. I have a couple of questions see if someone with more common sense would shine some lights on this.

A few days ago, i bought my first used jet boat. it was the 2008 seadoo speedster 150 for $8700 with 66hrs usage. i thought it was a good deal so drove 3 hrs across state for to pick it up. the person that sold me the boat promised me that there are not a single thing that needed fixin on the boat so i took his words for it. Mistake #1, i did not take the boat to test drive it on the lake before purchase because we are 2 hrs from the lake. I just had the guy start the engine on land for a few minutes. I'm not a mechanic but the engine sounded great to my ears. Mistake #2, I checked every part of the boat for problems except for the intake. When took the boat home i realized that i needed craw under there and take a look at the intake. This is when i found the broke intake grate with signs of tow ropes being ran over. I did a google on this and it seem like a lot of folks had this problem. Boat ran over ropes broke grate. This got me worried so i had to take the boat to the lake for a quick test drive. I have not had a good look to see if the wear ring or the impeller got damaged or not but the boat would not top speed at 7500 rmp. based on the reading from the boat, it shown around 40mph top speed at max throttle. From what i had read from the forum, top speed on the 2008 should be around 50mph. Boat seem to run fine on water but would not hit anywhere near 50mph. I have contact the seller about the issue and he told me that i don't know anything about the broke grate. He also offered to buy back the boat if i'm not happy with it.

so my questions to you (who got more common sense then me) is that how much would something like this cost to get it fixed? Would you just return the boat? Would you try to replace the grate and see if this fixed the problem. I'll try to take some pictures of the grate, wear ring and impeller and see if you can tell if i would also need those replaced. Impeller and wear ring sounded expensive. I kinda like the boat and would like to keep it but also afraid that this problem would cost too much to fix.

thanks in advance for the reply.

update -

I went ahead and take off the broken grate. checked the impeller and wear ring. they both look fine. i took some pictures but haven't figure how to upload or insert to this post. i inserted the photo to this post but can't seem to see it.

If you bought a used boat... I'm pretty sure you are stuck with it. So... the only choice you have, is to fix it.

2 questions to you....

1) How did you check the speed? The speedo's aren't normally right. A GPS is the only way to get a real speed. Also... I would think a non-supercharged 14.5' seadoo would only be in the mid 40's with a few people in it. It may get to 50 with one person.

2) Since you found damage to the grate... did you look to see if the impeller was damaged?

+1- my 215hp 08 Speedster GPS'd at like 53-54 max with just me in it. If the 155 does 50, I'd be surprised but then again, I have never driven one either.

Dr. Honda,

Thanks for the quick reply.
1. The speed that i was looking at was the speed that shown on the speedster digital. I was alone testing out the boat. I will bring my gps with me on my next test. I took off the grate and plan on replacing with one that get me a few more mpg. I'm not sure which one to get yet. still doing research on this. maybe you can recoment me one.

2. i took out the grate and shined light on it and i don't see any major damage to the wear ring, impeller or shaft. I have took pictures but have not figure out how to insert them into the post.

thanks again - jc

IMG_6535.JPGIMG_6532.JPGIMG_6537.JPGThanks Seadoobuddy for the instruction.

here are some pictures of the shaft, impeller and wear ring. Please take a look at them and see if they look normal to you.

Looks good to me, does not appear to be any significant damage to the edges of the impellor or gouges in the wear ring. As for the intake grate, I would just try and get the guy to cover or split the cost of a new one with you, screw it back on and away you go. Was there any rope left in the intake at all or are you justassuming it ran over a rope? Anyhow, not a major problem, if this is your only issue I would stick with it

I agree, everything you described sounds "normal" to me, the fastest I got my boat was like 34 on my digital display, but 40 to mid 40's is about right, now if you live in Florida, smooth non choppy water by yourself, my friends on here hit 50 and a little more, but with those conditions...

Intake grate Is nothing, I think that's the simplest fix you'll ever do on this boat.

Ps.. By the way I took my boat out again this Sunday 9-16-2012, me and my 2 boys had a blast, the water was somewhat choppy from the other boats, we rode it like a big pwc, what a blast, but anything like 50mph is unsafe in my opinion...

Yeah , your pump looks golden  if you want your speedster to get up quicker on choppy water , replace the factory grate with this guy, it just needs a little grinding on the one end to fit perfectly according to a Greenhulk forum. If i were in your shoes, i would do this. I put one of these on my GTX and holy wow , the get up and go factor almost doubled! anybody else think this is a good idea?

there were sign of yellow towing rope stuck in the crevest of the grate. i don't have a problem purchasing a new grate. only worry right now is from what i read that most 155hp speedster owners said that they have no problem doing 50+mph. I was alone with no cargo on the boat with full tank of gas and only got around 40mph on the dash board with WOT. i was worry that the impeller got damaged but now looking at the pictures it look ok. I thought that the boat was under perform but i can sleep a little better now when i heard that other owners also doing around 40 on their boats.

yepp , just remember your gonna have to grind and trim it a little bit to fit...........its not made exaclyt for boats.......but with a little work it will fit :)

Covert 80kph to mph and that's what a well performing Speedster 155 will hit (GPS speed) with 2 ppl. Take one person out add maybe 2-3 kph.

Hi,
I also bought a used 2008 last year and just recently found that my grate was missing/broke too. I've been using it for almost a year and the dealership said it's not necessary to repair and if I did it would cost way over 1000 dollars. I told them I'd wait until I have to replace the impeller since they have to remove and reseal everything at that time anyway. Mine does around 50mph.

That's my advice.

Just FYI- you do not have to remove and reseal everything to do the impeller :).

What are they doing for $1K, A used grate is less than $100. Are they installing a new grate, impeller and wear ring + labor,.....WOW!!!!

If the grate does not fit or you don't want to grind it, I may have a good deal for you.

I own a 2009 RXT-X and just ordered a R&D grate for it. The OEM grate for the RXT-X (255 hp) has the scoops like what you ordered.

I'd sell it to you for half the cost of your new one. It has 17 hours on it is all..

Either way, best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy your boat. As others suggested, check your speed with GPS. Free apps on the iphone...

The grate finally arived. Please take a look at the picture and tell me if what i circled need griding. I tried to put on but it look a little thick. meaning that it doesn't flush with the boat bottom.

After serval hours of messing around, i went ahead and grided the underside of the grate (see 2nd pic). Installed and it still not flush but i gave up and leave it as is.

I'll try to take the boat out this saturday and will update the results.

looks pretty good to me , my r/d grate doesnt sit flush either .....but if it bugs you you could always grind it some more..........or put ink on the side that mounts to the boat, and put it on, and then remove it and see where the ink is at on the boat..........that will let you know where the high spots are.

I took out the boat last night with wind around 10mph and that new intake grate. WOT speed on my iphone GPS shown 44mph into the wind. Look like the new grate added an extra mile. I'm not sure if this worth the money for for those folks that wanting to upgrade to a high performance grate, but for those folks that had broken grate and need replacement, i think think it is worth the money for the upgrade.

Its hard to beat the stocker for speed in good conditions. Most guys with pwc that replace the grate do it for rough water, it helps keep you hooked to the surface. With the extra weight the boat has to keep in in the water, not many people bother with this modification. Still, id be interested to here if you notice a difference in rough water, as i seem to come unhooked more than id like:willy_nilly:

My 05 Sportster 155 hp does 47 on GPS. That's with full gas and two geezers on board. Running premium gas, max at 7400 rpm. My original wear ring shows some wear, too. 45 hrs tt. (!) Will have it replaced.JetBoat4789.jpg
