Stills from video
I have been trying to edit and get this vid to DVD. It’s so simple to do the pump rebuild but twice as hard trying to record, make stills and edit what I recorded. What would normally be about a three hour job has turned out to be about 3 days.
I am using Nero Movie editing software and have made a few stills for this thread. In one pix, you’ll see the breaker bar I use to remove the impeller. I use a ½” drive bar about 18” long. The socket that holds the impeller removal tool is a ¾”.
This pump had damage to the forward shaft and bearing due to a lack of oil. Ya’ll have heard me say what kind of condition this ski was in when I bought it but you never know what it’s like mechanically, till you take it apart or maintenance it. With 100 hours on it, I almost bet the oil in it was from the time it was new.
I’m not sure if you can see it but on the shaft, if you look toward the end with the threads, you’ll see two really shiny lines or rings. This is where the needle bearings scored the shaft. I also put a pix of the needle bearing in but not to sure you can see the color change inside. If so, where you see the darkened color rings to the needle bearings, this is where they rode the shaft, burning it in.
If you noticed, I used my mic to measure that groove and it came out to be about .003” in difference to the rest of the shaft. I did buy a new one along with the bearing kit.
The last pix is of the wearing ring. When I took it apart, I discovered a hole about ½” in diameter near the edge of the pump housing. When I took this apart back in August to put on my new Solas, the ring looked fine. That was also when I discovered the bad bearings on the impeller side (forward) of the pump. In between the time I put the impeller on and took it back apart, the bearings had so much slop in them, that they wore the hole into the ring.
I have everything back together now with a new wearing ring, bearings and seal along with my new Solas impeller.
I hope to have the video edited and ready for members to view in the near future. Probably in November sometime………..
