96 Challenger tach #278000744 - needle fell off and is inside glass - can I cut this open to gut it and try to repair needle or is it a lost cause. Where would be the best spot to cut it open at back or near glass where the mounting rind threads on? Also, best place to find cheap/ used replacement in case I can't get it to work????

If it's broke... you have nothing to loose in trying to fix it.

I would try to cut the rear rim of the metal ring off... and then you can glue it back together.

For something like that... eBay is your best bet. (for a replacement)

None of the 2" tach's have anything other than a tach in it. (3 wires. +, - and signal)

The speedo's and info gauges are different though, and so are the 3" Tach's.

Thanks for the info - but most listings don't inform you if it is a 2" or 3" tach - is their a cross reference guide to see what model # would fit in the 2' space??? Any sources other that ebay to get one???

Same thing happened to my speedo. I cut the metal ring off, glass comes right off with it. I know on my speedster, with the ignition off, the needles on the gauges creep up a little. Once ignition is turned on they reset to zero. Make sure when you re-insert the needle you do it with the ignition on and it lines up with zero. Insert it gently first. Then, shut the ignition off, unplug it and press the needle in a bit more. They are a bear to get back out if you really press them in hard. I used black permatex sealer to seal the glass back on and wrapped it up and over the front to create the look of the ring I had destroyed while removing. Good luck!
