I took my GSX RFI year 2000 out for the first time this year. I put £20 fuel in the tank, topping up the few litres that were already in. It started no problem but then immediately started to misfire on acceleration and when ticking over. I ran it for about 2 mins until I got back to land.

I then started it up again and the 'low 12 volt' message appeared and it was still running rough and misfiring.

I got it home and have since changed the spark plugs and battery. Seems to sound OK out of water. I am going to water test it next week. I am aware that running in water will require more power from the electrical system hence why it might seem OK out of water and running rough in water.

Do you guys think the 2 faults could be linked? I am also considering changing the voltage regulator as it seems this could be the problem too?

Any help appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

Low battery voltage will cause the ski to do weird things including not running well. I'd check the battery voltage with the engine running to make sure your rectifier is charging.

OK an update. I have changed spark plugs and replaced battery with a new one. Hooked it up to a hose whilst on the trailer, still shows 12 v low after a minute or so. Any suggestions???

What voltage should the battery be reading when the ski is not running and then when it's running please?

OK thank you. Would it be fair to assume that if it fails to meet both of these, i need a new voltage regulator?

New battery, new plugs and fresh fuel and I am pleased to say it ran like a dream yesterday! The 12 volt low message came on for the first 10 mins or so and then disappeared however I'm going to fit the new rectifier this week so hopefully that should sort that.
