hey all, i just bought a seadoo gsx 97 limited a few weeks ago and when i took it to the mechanics he said the oil tank had been dissconnected and that i should premix the petrol so ive been doing that but noticed its been very smokey and the other day i had a look at the engine after a big ride and noticed this dripping from where the vavle is....

do you think i could have done any damage to the engine by doing this ? does it need to be pulled apart and cleaned out to get rid of any excess oil built up etc ? anything would help as im very new to this

It looks like your RAVE valves need a new gasket. I would take the RAVES appart and clean them out, especially if you've been running alot of oil. check the bellows for any rips or holes, clean and reassemble with new gaskets.

The oil injection is a very good system and very rarely does it fail. If you did decide to switch to premix, you need a mixture of 40:1 It will smoke more with premix. The oil injection system is controlled so at idle, your have a mixture of about 100:1 and 40:1 at full throttle. If you run premix, you have to dissable the oil injection pump and plug the little line going into the pump. Disconnect the cable to the injection pump as well. There are two larger lines that go right into the crankcase. THESE MUST REMAIN CONNECTED TO THE OIL TANK and have at least a 1/4 of a tank of PWC watercraft 2 stroke injection oil. DO NOT use cheap 2 cycle oil that you put in your chainsaw/weedeater. It must be for PWC.

Reason for this is there is a brass gear on the crankshaft that operates your rotary valve. It rotates in a bath of oil, supplied by the oil injection tank. If you dont add oil, the gear will eventually seize up and then you've got big troubles. My advice would be to hook up the injection system and run straight gas like it should be.

This machine is ANOTHER 97.5 GSXL Birk...so the Rotary valve does not apply here.

I premix my 800 motors and my RAVES still leak even after replacing ALL parts. Birk is right about the premix...its getting too much oil at anything other than wide open.

Typically on a injected motor it means that the Orings in the Raves are hard and not sealing, or the clearance between the Rave housing and shaft is too big. BUT....as I said...I replaced everything last summer and it still leaked.

So...you have not messed anything up, and its not a bad idea to take the Raves apart and replace the Orings (2 in ea on a 951)

Just one thing to add, even though you are running premix you still need to use API-TC rated full synthetic oil. I use Quicksilver, but lately I've seen some good prices on SeaDoo XPS.

Something else, please don't take my word for it, because honestly I've never run pre-mix, but I know a lot of guys use 50:1 and have no problem. Lets see if we can get some feedback.

50-1 is fine....you could prob go 60-1 if you werent holding it wide open for minutes at a time with good oil.

I run 45-1.

haha,Minnie holds it wide open for one minute 22 seconds at a time
This is good info and should be kept

I run WOT all day :)

throttle has 2 positions Idle and GO.

My RAVEs have never spit oil like that... on any of my 951s...

LOL well about the only time I hold it wide open is after a jump and I'm running back into position...or running across the lake to catch a boat.

Lake Minnetonka has 3' chop all the time and I let off the throttle every time I get airborn.

Just a small idea from older heads. The gasket under that valve is a fibre type material.Be it paper or cardboard type stuff. Before you install the gasket and part, rub some red rubber grease on both sides of the gasket. As the part is tightened,it can still move ever so slightly into the correct position and the grease that was put on,will slightly swell the gasket to give an even better seal.Put some grease on any paper type gasket and let it sit.Over time ,it will swell up.Hope this helps
