Looking to pick up a cruising/tubing/water-skiing boat. Have a cottage at Lake Scugog,Ontario which is a relatively weedy lake, very weedy in certain areas.

Just curious if the jet engines would have more issues with weeds getting into and causing issues with the engine?

Also, assuming the owner still has the service records for the Merc 240 motor, how has reliability been on this boat? Anything I should be looking for in particular with a used jet boat?

Thanks!

Yes the jet boats will have more troubles with sucking up weeds i would go with an outboard im not sure about the reliability of it but my cousin has a 2010 hurricane sun deck 217 outboard and it is great in weedy lakes and bays.

I have a 2001 challenger 2000 and I switched to a rock grate and removed the factory hydrosurge that causes so many problems

I have only been in weedy areas twice last year and both times I had to dive under the boat to clear it.

I have been swimming a couple of times due to weeds here in rice lake, Ontario. Weeds are really bad this year. If you can manage to plane out, you can clear them. I have also ran the boat for a few seconds and then shut it off for a few seconds and that can clear it.

I to have had to take the dive to pull weeds out. I'm not as afraid of pulling weeds now that I got rid of the hydro-surge too. I was afraid of getting my hand stuck!

That is one advantage the yamaha jet boats have on us. Those pump plugs can be pulled to clear weeds. On that same note, they also have the issue of the plugs potentially popping while under way. Third party clips are almost a must.

Nature of the beast I guess.
