SBT Wear ring Install

I went with the SBT wear rings instead of OEM. It's a much tighter fit to the impeller than the old OEM ring was. So tight in fact that it binds up just a bit. Not much, I can still turn the impeller easily by hand, but it is shaving a very very small amount of plastic saw dust at a certain point where the wear ring is contacting the impeller. Is this normal? I assume the impeller will fix this problem in virtually no time at all once I start the engine by "sanding down the wear ring. I just wanted to make sure this was ok and that the wear ring wasn't out of round or anything. Its a very, very tight fit and probably only hitting by a few thousandths or so.

It should be O.K., even OEM wear rings will do that. I'm going on my third season with a SBT delrin wear ring, it shows very little wear, I really like it. Usually I get no more than 2-3 seasons from an OEM.

my 2 cents on SBT wear rings.

I love`m! ran them in my past GP1300R instead of the factory SS wear ring. I would get 10-15 hours before I`d have cavitation burns.

SBT wear rings are really meant for the OEM impeller. Most aftermarket impellers will be tight in the SBT wear ring.
simple solution, spray CRC, WD40, soapy water, foamy glass cleaner, into the impeller area prior to start up, then fire it up.

I`m running Solas impellers so what I did was use the impeller tool to spin the impeller while I had the pump out on the bench initially cutting in the wear ring. I used foamy glass cleaner to make it slippery. Then I installed the pumps on the boat. Fired up the engines briefly, then took the boat down to the ramp and let it idle and warm up for 20+ minutes. (this was the first time in the water and burning off some storage oil).

now it`s ready to go and they spin easy...
