So I can't start the boat because I need a starter, but when I get the starter I won't be able to start the boat... previous owner let something chew the safety key. Local seadoo place wants 55 plus 100 to program. Does this thing really need programing???

2000 challenger 2000.

Yeah I'm driving an hour away to get a key programmed, sure home this boat actually runs after I spent a few hundred just to find out. Ugh.

Many of us buy the CanDoo Proo. It allows us to program our own keys and plug into the boat/ski and see whats going on... That said,, you have the Merc Engine, I am not sure if it is compatible...

it's a Merc boat. There's no DESS in it. All you need is a $15 generic lanyard.

Hope you read this before you take the drive.

Dr Honda, that's the answer I was hoping for! The old one doesn't say DESS on it. But looks like a dog got to it.

I feel like an idiot. I just looked closer at the stuff on the dash, it is definitely the Dess Style. The button that the lanyard would push pin is jammed in on the switch , so at first glance I thought it was just a cap that went over it.

The DESS system was ONLY in the Rotax boats. The DESS post has a metal tip, and ring contact where the chip in the lanyard will make contact. The standard has a plastic plunger. (button)

What engine(s) in your boat?

got ya.

But on that note... you should list the engine in your info. It could be a 210 (carbs) or 200 Opti. Then next time you have a question... it will there for all to see.

The Doc is right on this one. I actually had a lanyard stretch just a bit and would not push the button all the way in. I took the lanyard off and pushed the button in with my finger and started the boat up. Drove in to get my spare lanyard.

Not sure, but I don't think I have a DESS Chip in my middle finger. It was pretty numb by the time I got on the lift though. HA!!

Good luck

Note to self,,, spare lanyards should be with you, not at home or in the truck. I have every lanyard I own for my two skis every time I get u/w.
